"New" label now shows on forum list
Posted: 15 Mar 06 11:38 PM
|
The "new" label now shows on the main forum list page. This way you can now easily tell which forums have new posts since the last time you checked that forum.
This feature does require cookies (it doesn't store the visited forums/threads server-side based on the user. It stores it in a cookie so it can work for non-logged in users too). I also dropped the caching down to only 2 mins for that page. It was set at around 15 mins before before the cache would invalidate and the page would update. This should be much more useful.
Let me know if there are any problems and keep the suggestions coming!

fiogf49gjkf0d I can do that. The page can be a bit heavy, so I mainly just implemented caching so that it wouldn't be a heavy hit on the server each time, but 30-60 secs would still be doable without causing many problems.
I've now changed it to only a 30 sec cache time. Better than no cache, but should be more up to date when bouncing in and out of forums.

fiogf49gjkf0d Ryan:
I love your new forums and the "New" label is great, but (isn't there always one?) it seems to act strangely sometimes. I just was on the form list and replied to a post and then when I went back it showed a few forums had "new" items, but when I drilled down to these forums they did not have anything new. So I do not know if it is just me (believe it or not, it happens to be 'me' more often then not ) - but I thought I would just pass this along and see if you had any other feedback about the "New" label acting strange sometimes.

Yes there is some bug there somewhere (so it's not just you Ted). It is top on my list for fixes when I get some extra time (hehe, extra time).
Thanks for the heads up Ted.

fiogf49gjkf0d Thanks for the confirmation that I was not going crazy. Let me know what it is like to have "extra time" - sadly the concept has been eluding me lately .

fiogf49gjkf0d Ted, are you waiting long enough ? There is a timer, which Ryan has reduced, and I think it's 1 minute (or could now be 30 seconds). |

fiogf49gjkf0d I'm not sure that caching is the problem. I think there is something else going on. The "New" thing is stored via cookies so maybe privacy settings in the browser is causing it to be a bit off??? Not sure.
Anyway, just to rule the timing of the cache out I've disabled that completely from the main forum list page for the time being.

fiogf49gjkf0d This is still acting bizarre. I can come to the site and have forums 1, 3, and 5 show as having new items. I know they do not, but I visit them anyhow hoping to resolve the issue. After I visit forum 1, I come back to the main page and now forms 2, 4, 5, and 8 have new items. This is just an example but that is the type of behavior I am seeing.
I have added this site as a trusted site and made the "check for newer versions" set to automatically. Not sure what it is but is a major pain point. I cant remember when I last visited the site (date and time) nor am I good at adjusting for the time difference since the web server seems to store server time and not client time when it comes to posts.
I really appreciate the effort, Ryan, so please dont read into this as a slam. It just makes it so much harder to be a proactive participant without a true "whats new" feature. Maybe it is just something I can fix on my end? If so, just let me know.
Thank you,
Timmus |

melatonin and weed melatonin and weed fiogf49gjkf0d Hi Timmus,
I have to agree, the whole "new" label thing is causing more pain than benefit. I'm not sure what is going wrong with them, they do rely on cookies, and I've tried adding the site as a trusted site and all too with no luck. Here is how I am thinking of changing the labels (feedback greatly appreciated):
Instead of relying on cookies, I was thinking that I would make the "new" label only available to logged in users (vistors not logged in would just see nothing as far as a "new" indicator). This way I could store all of that server side in the database for each user. It wouldn't matter if the users browser didn't support cookies, since I would just match up the viewed posts stored in the database with the current user. Another benefit of using this approach is that the viewed posts would not be machine specific (so you could log in from another pc and still only see "new" labels on the ones you haven't seen before regarless of pc you are on.
What do you think of that? |

fiogf49gjkf0d That sounds like a great plan!
Thanks again for continuing to improve the site. Apparently there are many customers out there alone in the dark. Its nice to have a positive, friendly, and well designed forum to help them out.

fiogf49gjkf0d Thanks Timmus. Well that settles it - if it's good enough for a Top 10 Poster then I'm all for it too
BTW, thanks for all your participation in the forums! |

I think I have the "new" label problems all worked out. Please keep an eye on things in the next day or so and let me know if you see problems.
Thanks!
BTW, I didn't yet change things from a cookie based storage to database, but I will still do that at some point. I just saw a possible quick fix and did that for now. |

fiogf49gjkf0d It still does not seem to be working for me ... as an example the ADO forum does not show anything new, but the date shows something was posted today and I have not looked at those messages yet. I then drilled down and under the ADO forum it shows the "new" label, but it shows them for forums that I have already read.
I didn't reply earlier but I agree with Timmus - the database storage idea is great. I login from both my home and work PC so if the system was able to track what I read that would be my ideal.
In any case, I love what you are doing with this site and the forums are just another great innovation that you are providing. I know you are doing this on your own and all your help and posts are greatly appreciated. I am working around the "new" label for now by looking at the posting dates to see when they have been updated. Generally this lets me filter previously read older postings.

fiogf49gjkf0d Hi Ted,
Thanks for the feedback. I have noticed that something isn't quite right with the "new" label as well. I've been reworking some code in hopes for a quick fix, but I think the solution will be to just pull it all server-side.
Thanks! |
