Boy! am I glad I found you. Ive spent the last two weeks fumbling around in the dark with no one to guide me. Our company recently purchased SalesLogix and I am fulltime administrator. We go live in a month and I have a ton of customizations to do. I was talking to Gene Underwood ( a programmer with our Vendor, Spinnaker) today and I mentioned that I found this site and he knew you all by name and had high praise. I'm spending the evening reading through all of your old posts to see if I can't knock a couple issues off my list before I start hounding you guys. No need to waste your time without first running a dedupe process. So, again, thanks in advance

Hi Brian and welcome! I hope you find the site and forums useful (and minimize some stress and headaches in the mean time) while you're getting ramped up on SalesLogix.

Welcome to the site, Brian!

I am always hesitant with customizations. I have been doing them for years (SLX and other apps) and the biggest issue is moving from one version to the next. From the sounds you're coming in at a transition point. What I mean is the product is going from 6.x to 7.0. While you don't mention which version you are getting it would be good to know. If you are starting with the latest 6.x version this might be an extrememly good argument for implementation to be held off until 7.0 comes out.. or go ahead with the 6.x implementation... but leave customizations to be done when you have 7.0. It'd probably be a good idea to learn everything that 6.x and the newer 7.0 versions can do for you out of the box. We have one customization that I would call a medium size customization (adding margin and profit to opportunities - why cost isn't already part of products I don't know) There are other little customizations like an added button here and there.

Good luck!
John G.

If you stick to the VBScript side of things, your transition from 6.2 to 7 will be minimal. In fact you may not have to change anything depending on what it is you're doing.

For example our transition from 6.1 to 6.2 was simple. I made minor modifications that mainly took advantage of a different way of thinking and I could have just left my customizations and they would have been fine (at least testing proved that). I'm just now realizing the power of mainviews, so I'll be reworking some stuff to take advantage of them. This is a good iterative exercise that'll eventually take residence inside my brain but isn't exactly necessary at the moment.

As far as certification goes? Wait for v7. That's precisely what I'm doing even though there supposedly is an easy "upgrade" certification course.

We are currently have SalesLogix v6.2 Service Pack 4 and Marketing Feature Pack v6.2.4. We are expecting to upgrade to v7 in January. The design stage of this project was started by a manager in April 05, so the rollout at the end of September is pretty well set in stone.
Re: upgrade to v7, I don't mind if I have to duplicate any work though , because I am having fun in the new development environment. In fact I am building extra forms and views to explore how things work. It is kind of like its Christmas morning and I've been given and Erector set and get to put aside my Tinker Toys.

Hi Brian & Welcome!

You certainly have come to the right spot. Ryan Farley has created a great place for all of us to share our questions and code snippets. You will find a lot of experience (and a number of opinions ) to help get you started.

Good Luck,

Carla

Rock On Brian !

There are many, many ways of upgrading. I originally went from 5.x -> 6.0, using SQL DTS. Despite what people may think SLX Unique Id's can be anything you want (take care of SITEKEYS table though.) One can practically pump data into any version of SLX from whatever format you may have, be it Excel, Oracle, XML, flat file....

I have also customised practically every form / script that exists ! Upgrade Procedure was still relatively smooth from 6.0 -> 6.2.4. (about 1/2 day to physically do it followed by 1 day to tweak) Just make sure you don't release the new plugins over your existing and that gives you the option of perusing / testing these at your leisure.

I even have SLX integration with live vehicle tracking for Customer Services through to the customer web portals for order tracking. We can dynamically create activities, and pump these out to Salesforce PDA's based on Accounts in their current location.

I liken SLX to putty - one just needs to think of something and within SLX it can be done.

Have a pleasant SLX journey....

Mark
