Search Screens?

fiogf49gjkf0d Hi ya Ryan!
We are gaining quite the library of knowledge thanks to you and your website. Great Job! However, that lovely information is not always 'locatable'. I almost hate asking a busy guy like you, but : Have you had an opportunity to work on the search screens?

fiogf49gjkf0d Hi Carla!
I completely agree. The forums have been an extremely useful place and there's been some really great discussions and knowledge shared. It sucks that all this great info isn't easier to find in the forums
Here's the long term plans for the site and some short term fixes I have planned...
When I first launched the site I built it all. Everything in the site is my own creation and code I've written. While I did come out of the experience with a great portal framework and had a great time writing the code, the problem I have now is that I have to spend my "free" time (hehe) making updates and additions to the site instead of writing new articles, which is what I would rather be doing with my time. So, not exactly the result I had in mind.
So, what I have been working on is migrating the site to a commercial portal framework (I'll have Community Server for the back end, see http://www.communityserver.org/, although the look and feel of the site will be the same familiar slxdevelope.com but drastically updated and nicer on the eyes). What this will mean is that I can stop spending my time doing the work on the site and instead focus on content. This will be great, although there is still much work to do so I can't commit to a time frame for completion...yet. With the commerical framework on the back end, and some custom addons I'll be making for it, we'll have everything we have now, but improved. The forums will be better, including features such as marking a thread as answered, rating posts, bookmarking threads, posting attachments (images, files, etc) in forum posts, private messages, improved views such as standard forum look & feel or a more threaded look (like looking at a newsgroup in Outlook Express) etc etc etc. We'll also have improved filesharing, better news handling, awesome searching capabilities, etc. The best part is that I don't have to continually keep making updates to the site myself
So that's the long term goals and the work has already begun.
Now, for the short term fixes until we get there...
Searches, as things are now, completely suck. I don't want to make people wait until the site overhaul to get better searching. I started toying with a seach screen that used google behind the scenes to performs the indexing and searches (all transparent since the search page was a built in page on the site). However, I didn't like that for three reasons. 1) The forum pages all have the same title. This makes all the results look the same when using a search engine. I could change this if needed. 2) The results we not available until the site was reindexed by google, which I have no control over. 3) I had no ability to limit my searches to only articles, only forum posts, or both combined. So, I am going to add a custom search on the site to keep up all happy until the new site is in place. I've completed the design for it, added all the right things in the database and I've got my full-text search code complete. I just have to plug all the peices together now.
Anyway, probably more of an explanation than you wanted, I just wanted to let you know where it's all heading... |

fiogf49gjkf0d Thanks busy guy!!
Hey - is there anything the community can help you with? You've a few good programmers out there that could donate a little time here and there... Or is it one of those things that it would take more time to explain than it would to fix? I know I would love to see you get to do what you love by writing more articles. Your ability to share difficult knowledge with the community had been a rock to many of us.
