I need to be able to read data from another SQL database (on same server) and insert those records into SLX. My roadblock is how (specifically) would I prepare a connection string for the external db.

Provider=Microsoft.sqloledb;Database=dbname; server=servername; uid = user; pwd=password

If anyone has a sample or could direct me on this, I would appreciate it.

thanks,
Dave

Create an empty text file on your desktop and rename it test.udl. 'UDL' identifies the file as a universal data link file.

Then double-click it - this will open up the connection builder. Enter your connection info for the external data - it will be saved back into the UDL file. Then edit the UDL file using Notepad - your connection string is there.

If the connection string has any " characters in it, you will need to be slightly convoluted about the way you build the conn string in code. If you get stuck with this, post again & I'll give you some sample code.

Another option, if your SQL is up to it, is to build a connection object in SSIS and use that to pump your data into SLX. This is a better option if you are writing a routine that does a regular transfer of data - ie which is not in response to an event on the SLX client.

The method of creating UDLs is great and it has saved me on occassions where I didn't have my "bag of tricks".

One of my own "tricks" is a VBScript that uses the DataLinks object to do this and give me the connection string.

However, you don't have to go beyond this site to get what you are looking for: http://www.slxdeveloper.com/page.aspx?action=viewarticle&articleid=36
