Trouble making a Date Lookup

We are using 7.2.1 and I have some code that I am working on so that when a button is pressed on a form we display a lookup .. thing is this is for a custom field that is a date. I have done this many times before with other fields but none of them were dates... I get an error when the lookup displays and I just hit enter ( returning all the records ). The error is :
Exception: EInvalidOperation:
Cannot focus on a disabled or invisible window
Exception location:
[004B6323]{SalesLogix.exe}
Thing is if I change the field type to a string I do not get the error .. I also do not get any results that work because the field I am pointing the lookup to is a date field. I also tried looking for another SLX standard lookup that is a date one and I could not ... maybe lookups by dates don't work?
Has anyone come across this ?
