Is there anyway to change the color of a tab? For instance, if there are opportunities for an Account, I would like to give the user a visual clue that there is something within the Opportunity tab.

Not possible. You can only change the color of the form on the tab, but the user won't be able to see that until they've selected the tab first. You can however change the tab caption itself at runtime. I've done that before to indicate that there is data there (by adding a "*" after the caption)
