Does anyone know of a way you can create an Opportunity for a Lead? Some of our folks do a lot of cold-calls and will be asked for a quote, but we don't really want to turn these into an Account if they are "just fishing". It appears to me this is not something we can do.

As Steve says.. not possible OOTB.. Even with the changes in 7.5 (Activities/History for Leads have been added) still not possible OOTB.

Two choices:
A - When an opportunity pops up for a lead, just convert the lead to an account/contact and have it build teh opp as part of the conversion (does this OOTB)

B - to mod SalesLogix you would need to add some fields to opp (ex:LEADID) and then basically re-write a chunk of things to make sure all of the account hooks were covered...

Remember, ACO (Account/Contact/Opportunity) was the original model (11 or so years ago).. and still is..

I'd vote for "A" as the approach that way you will not be pushing the rope uphill
