Hi,

Can you advise me as to what skills are required to become a Saleslogix developer please? We are currently using Saleslogix v6.1 and will be upgrading to 7.2. We have plans to integrate Saleslogix with our back office systems, web portals and utilise web functionality once we have moved to version 7.5. Any advise on books, courses, programming skills and training courses will be much appreciated.

Hi,

May I first compliment you on having one of the most important skills necessary to become a SalesLogix Developer - being able to log into SlxDeveloper.com. There is a wealth of information here for all levels of SalesLogix developer.

If you are going to continue using the LAN client in 7.2 and 7.5 then you will need some scripting, specifically VB Scripting, experience. You can also develop new forms using .NET. If you plan to migrate across to the Web platform then you will need to get up to speed on .NET development and, because most of the examples are in this language and it is easier all round, I would recommond learning C#.

If you are a Sage business partner then you can get access to a certain level of development documentation.

There are some links to training guides manuals on the front page of this site.

Regards,

Stephen

There is also a developer class offered by Sage out in Scottsdale. It is invaluable for the new developer who needs to learn "the SalesLogix way" of doing things - which is just different enough from standard application development to be a whole new methodology.

For some reason, I read that last line as "...a whole new mythology"

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for your advice - just so I have this clear it is VB Scripting and not VBA code?

Thanks,
Jyoti

Hi,

Yes, definitely VBScript, not VBA. There is a SalesLogix Application object exposed to all VBScripts that run within the client that encapsulates all of the SalesLogix code.

The development trend now and in the future is going towards .net skills. Scripting for the lan client in current iterations and C#/VB.net for the web. When the LAN migrates to the new framework it too will be .Net. Being proactive in obtaining some skills centered around C#, .Net Framework, ASP.net, AJAX, SData and JSON will help very much as well.

Hi Chorki,

Depending on what you are trying to do of course, you could consider add on products such as TaskCentre to help you with back-office integration.

Am I right that you're based in Glasgow? If so, contact Orbis Software at www.-orbis-software.com

Regards,
Paul
