I am trying to make a couple of small changes to the Contact Details form. I understand that I have to save a copy of the form, being read-only, to be able to edit it. I have tried To release the plugin to myself, but I cannot view it when logged into the client. Also, when I made the copy of the Contact Details form, it was dumped into the System family, I expected it to be under Contact. So, how might I release the edited form so that I can first see that it functions correctly, and then release it to everyone so that it appears in the contact main view?

**edit**
I am using SalesLogix 6.2.6.

Hi Anthony,

All the details forms will be found in the System family - it stops them showing up under "More Tabs". This is normal behaviour.

SalesLogix implements versioning on plugins. When you save a released version of a plugin, you need to give it a new version number (which will auto-increment for you). The old version is still released to everyone else and what they will see. When you log in, you will see your version of the plugin. You can make as many changes as you like, and keep re-saving and re-testing until you are happy and then you release to everyone else. Then they have the changes. If you want to make a change after that, you need to create a new version.

Of course, it is not generally recommended that you work like this. You should make a dev copy of your database (you will need to clear the SERVERPATH field in SYNCSERVER to prevent logging/sync issues) and work on that to create your changes. Once they have been tested, you can then bundle them and apply to the live system. In fact, I generally have a Live, Test and Dev system. I develop on the Dev system and do my own testing there. I then bundle and apply to the Test system to allow the customer to run their own testing and then that same bundle can be applied to the live system once signed off. This, I think, is a best practice.

Stephen

Yep it's the method I use too - can get a little confusing if you have to make a "late breaking" change to Live and put back into Dev/Test of course But that never happens does it !!

Well, the Contact Detail form we are currently using is under the Contact Family and is of type Report. Given the company associated with this plugin is Saleslogix, I would say this is unedited out of the box? I have looked at both the Account Detail (Account family, Type=report) and Opportunity (Opportunity family, Type=report) detail and noted the same thing. If I make a copy of one of these, I cannot seem to open the copy. What am I missing here?

Hi Anthony,

Can you let us know exactly what you want to do? Do you want to edit the Contact Details form that is displayed to the user on the Contact Main View (form = "System:Contact Details", type = "Form") or are you trying to modify the Contact Details report? If the report then you can't open directly in Architect. You need to go to Manage - Reports, find the report that you want and check it out and then open it with Crystal.

Well, apparently I am just easily confused. Typically when I go to edit something in SLX, I log in as Admin, right click where I would like to edit, and select Design. For whatever reason, this kept taking me to the Contact Detail report. I went back to the system family and found the form that has been released to everyone, made a copy, and edited that. I can now see my changes when I log into the client, so I believe I should be good to go.

Hi Anthony

There will soon come a time when you will want to change something, yet cannot access it via right-click / Design - I would recommend that you start to learn how to make these changes directly in Architect in an organised fashion using projects and bundles. Of course, you need to learn what the names of the forms are to do that, but a little trial and error (or just post your question here) will get you there - usually it is obvious.

If you edit an OOTB form (eg Contact Detail) in Architect, it will automatically create a new version of the form when you save it. You will see these versions listed if you press F9 (Manage Plugins) in Architect. In this scenario, you will also notice that the new version you have created is not yet released. So at this stage, only people who log in as ADMIN will see the changes that you have made. There is no need to explicitly 'make a copy' as you have done.

If you mistakenly try to edit an old version of a form, Architect will display a warning message.

I also recommend that you check Tools / Options in Architect and make sure that 'Plugins are read only when released' is checked. This means that, once you have released a plugin, if you edit it the changes will be saved as a new version of the form - and will then have to be re-released when you are happy. By doing this, you ensure that you do not overwrite any forms which are released and (presumably) in active use.

Phil
