Mail Merge in Outlook 2003 vs. 2008Your last visit to this thread was on 1/1/1970 12:00:00 AM

OK, here's the situation:

Client had been using MS Outlook 2003. When the user who generates press releases created a mail merge, it looked fine in both Outlook 2003 and 2008.

The users client was recently updated to Outlook 2008. Now when she creates a Mail Merge, it still looks fine when opened in outlook 2008, but certain characters (double dash, apostrophe, other "smart key" characters, etc..) are translated as a box when opened in Outlook 2003.

Sending the e-mails as text only is not an option. The issue only occurs when performing a mail merge from a machine with the outlook 2008 client and then opening the email from Outlook 2003.

Has anyone else come across this? If so, any solutions?

There is an Outlook 2008??? LOL... just got use to 2007.

Is word on as Outlook's editor? Did you try turning it off? I know the after 2003 Word changes quite a bit.

Honestly, I've had nothing but problems doing email blast out of SLX. The formatting always seems to muck up on different clients. If you're trying to create something that is highly customized and graphical.... You may want to do as I did and get Swiftpage.

No, there isn't an Outlook 2008.

Also, we have a very good integration with ConcepGlobal/Abachi - with integration back/to SLX.

Works very tidily !

Thanks for the responses LeVar and Mike. Not sure what i was thinking calling it 2008.

Anyway, they don't really use the MM utility as a true "mail merge". It's used more as a simple email blast utility with history recording. So for now I wrote a pretty basic work around utility to allow them to send out e-mail blasts and record the history. It gathers the emails from either the current or a selected group and places them into the Bcc field on an email along with a subject, etc.., then gives them the option to record the history. This is used primarily to send press releases and to record who they were sent to. It should work for their needs.

I will look into SwiftPage in the future if we determine that they need a true MM utility for more personalized messages.

Thanks again,
Al
