I remember coming across something (I think in DevLogix III) to differentiate retired reps from active reps. Can someone tell me if there is such a field, where it is located, and any other useful information associated with it?

The field you want is type in the usersecurity table. As I recall the values are...

W - Admin
P - Template
C - Concurrent/Support
N - Network
R - Retired
V - WebViewer
M - Remote User
T - WebOnly

Since v6.2 SP1 C is just plain concurrent for BOTH the SalesLogix Client and support.
As of v7.0.. there's no support client.
