What are the common development tools used in SLX? VB, C# & .Net?

The standard way of doing any SLX customizations is VBScript.

Hi Ryan - thx for the reply...I’m trying to learn more about SLX and the development tolls used in creating and modifying. I have a client who is requesting someone have exp with VB & C# (a must) with Visual Studio (a plus). Are VB & C# standard tools someone who has experience developing with SXL will have exposure too and what would Visual Studio be used for in SLX?

To customize any screen in SLX you use VBScript. The development tool that comes with SLX, called the Architect, uses VBScript only. For any *typical* development for SLX you'll use VBScript exclusively. That is all.

However, you can built apps in C#, VB, etc that work with SLX, operate on SLX data, interact with the SLX client via COM, etc as well, but that is not the norm. You can write your own code, outside of SLX, in any language, to work along side SLX. The client might have needs that extend beyond what is posible in standard customization in SLX and therefore has the requirement that you know .NET as well to satisfy this need. The client might also be misinformed about how development is done for SLX which is why they have this requirement. I would want someone with .NET or similar dev experience as well as it shows formal dev experience (scripting alone doesn't always show that). There could be many reasons why the client wants someone with .NET experience, however, for standard development for SLX, or to customize any OOTB screens or other areas in SLX, you'll use VBScript.

This is awesome information and so helpful, one more question...how hard do you foresee it to find someone with this skill set?

SLX is it's own beast. It's not the easiest thing for someone with development experience, but no SLX experience to just jump into. There is so much that is just not documented. Things about developing for SLX that you just sort of "have to know" from experience (or rely on a site like this one to help get you through some of the undocumented SLX quirks )

Of course it all depends on what type of development you need done, but I would probably put the focus on the "SLX experience" part. Then drill into those with the .NET experience. The problem you'll find is locating candidates with SLX experience.

That said, SLX can be relatively easy to learn for someone with the right skillset. As long as they understand that there are things that are just going to give them some headaches (and make sure they know about this site hehe). Some one who knows how to "learn" and can stay on top of some of the weirdness of SLX should do OK.
