Getting picture out of SLX

I've used the document created by Ryan to save and display a picture within SLX(http://www.slxdeveloper.com/page.aspx?action=viewarticle&articleid=62). However, what I'm attempting to do now, is display a picture in a mail merge template. The catch is that I can't use a picture control in the template since there is not a set number of pictures that will display, could be 0, could be 10. I believe I'm just missing something because when I attempt to load the picture programmatically, I am getting the binary data to display in my merge document. I am attempting to use the same code as in the article above. Any ideas what I may be missing?
