Grid Selection Speed Issues

Sortable = true, so all 5,000 records are loaded into the data grid.
If the user selects x,000 rows it takes forever to walk the selection collection and pluck out the ID field value.....
CPU is pegged at 100%, RAM doesn't budge and there's another Gb free on the machine.....
DOH, but it does make a difference if the user picks the Last x,000 records in the grid (slower than the middle x,000, and slowest as compared to the top of the grid x,000).
do I need to get away from Ultimate Grid and move into something else? VIBlend for example? Would a .NET grid be any faster?
