I am trying to develop a reuseable .NET form to generate a SQL Connection string. I know that I can send a broadcast packet out to get a list of SQL Servers on the local network. I expect that if I sent out this packet , I would only get the SQL server instance names. Does anyone have any experience trying to get the SLX server instance name from the local network?

Query the local provider and use slx_GetServerList() stored proc to get the list of slx server on the network.

But this used to have a problem in slx 6.1 - when this is executed the broadcast generated may not pass thru subnets and will only list the server in your own subnet i guess.Dont know whether this problem vanished now with slx 6.2.4

Thanks both of you, I was hoping I would only have to send a packet to another port but this is a great help. Again thanks!

The "problem" still exists but it's more of a "functioning as designed" sort of thing. You wouldn't want to send this broadcast packet out across the internet or anything, so it pretty much has to stay localized.

If you REALLY needed to get around the limitation, you could create a peer-to-peer type of thing that would query all of the saleslogix servers for each subnet then used something to compile all of them into one big list. A good bit of work for such a little pay off but it seems doable.

FYI: The reason broadcast packets do not cross subnets has to do with how the router(s) are setup to handle them. There is a function called "bridging" (vrs routing). Most good routers support bridging but you will (probably) never find a good network engineer that will enable bridging since it can cause what is called a "Braodcast Storm" and take down your network and all of your systems. I once saw a 1000 system net go down this way.. evey piece of equipment in tht net (server room and all) had to be shut down and then individually rebooted after thr routers were "fixed". It took 3 days to get everything back running normal. People got fired.... and they deserved it.
