I've been developing in Web Manager for about half a day, and all of a sudden after modifying a pick list in the Contact List View Advanced Search, I received the following message:

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but we cannot complete your request for the following reason(s):
General Login exception occured."

Now I can't login at all. I've bounced IIS and restarted the server, but the problem remains. To be specific, I changed the following statement in the conconmpl.htm template:

<#PL list="Owners" name="title" style="width:150px">

I'm not sure why this would crash the application. Even after reverting back to the previous unchanged version of the conconmpl.htm template, the application still won't let me login. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Thanks,
- Kent

I have experienced this behavior before. Sometimes I have to reboot my system before the SlxWeb components releases the components that it does not like.

Did you use the Windows Event Viewer to look at the Application event log for items logged by the Slx Web components?

Yes, I thought that rebooting the server would get past the problem, too, but unfortunately, it didn't help. I looked at the Event Viewer and found the following error:

Error processing HTML template Server : SalesLogix
Thread ID: 2044 User: ADMIN
IP: 10.2.5.27 conconmpl
Rendering Stage: Scan Pass
Tag Handler:
Access violation at address 01248FC0 in module 'slxweb.dll'. Read of address 0000000C

Unfortunately, this started happening an hour and a half before I was locked out of the application, so while disturbing, I'm not sure that it's relevant.

Can you go to start>run and type iisreset
Then try and login, if you get a general login error you should have an error in your event Viewer, is this the case?

One other thing to check is the URL you are using make sure it ends with home i.e.
../scripts/slxweb.dll/home
and NOT
../scripts/slxweb.dll/login

I did an iisreset and got the same error upon attempting to log in. I even bounced the machine and got the same error upon attempting to log in. The error in the event viewer after the failed login attempt is:

Exception (Login) Server : SalesLogix
Thread ID: 1540 User: ADMIN
IP: 10.2.5.27
Line 1: Incorrect syntax near 'Administrator'

I have verified that my URL ends with "../scripts/slxweb.dll/home". I can get to the login page, but can't actually login.

Is this error also being logged now when you try to logon?

What version of the SlxWeb are you running?

Is "conconmpl" one of the templates that you were editing?

Are you sure you rolled back to an exchanged version of the items you were edited? Double check in the WebManager to make sure the unedited version is the only version that is active.

That is correct -- the same error is still being logged in the event viewer now when I try to login. We're running version 6.2 of slxweb.

"conconmpl" is the template I was editing. I rolled back the change, and still get the same login error.

Kent,

In my 6.2.4 system I do not see the statement...

<#PL list="Owners" name="title" style="width:150px">

However I do see this statement...

<#PL list="Owners" name="owner" style="width:150px">

Is this perhaps what you intended?

Hi Frank,

Well, my users wanted to change the "Owners" search field on the Contact List View Advanced Search to "Title". I was in the middle of attempting to make this change when SalesLogix decided it wasn't going to let me log in any more.

Also, I've deactivated my version of conconmpl.htm and reactivated the base template version of this file. I wouldn't think that a bad version of conconmpl.htm would impact login, but there are certainly a lot of things about SalesLogix that I don't know.

Still confused,
- Kent

So I take it that you are now able to log on. Is this correct?

BTW, you can not change the Account Ownership lookup in the way you want.

No, I still can't login. Yesterday SalesLogix arbitrarily locked me out and I haven't been able to login since regardless of what I do (not that I'm frustrated).

My plan for the Contacts Advanced Lookup was to substitute a "Title" picklist for the "Owners" picklist. I saw an example of such a picklist in the coninfo.htm template (contact detail screen). Essentially, they set the value of a Javascript variable equal to the result set of the 'contitle' alias, like so:

var contitle = "<#F name=contitle>";

Then the reference the Javascript variable in the "Title" picklist, like so:

<#PL list=Title field=contitle style="width:225px">

Does that sound like it would work? As soon as I started coding this, I started running into problems. Initially, the top panel (containing the lookup fields) would display an error instead of rendering HTML, and then eventually, I was completely locked out of the application. If my picklist conversion caused this application-wide problem, shouldn't I be able to solve it by activating the previous version of the template? The fact that this does not in fact solve the login problem leads me to believe it's something else, but unfortunately, I have no idea what.

Hi Kent,

The chances of the change you made to conconmpl, stopping you from login is extremely remote, as by default it wouldn't load that page.
A few things I would check
1. Run the Configuration Checker in Web Manager and check there are no errors
2. Is this the only change you have made?,
- I would go back into web manager and press F11 and select the current page
- Then select the Base package.
- Select all of the base files for Templates right click deactivate, and then re-right click and activate
- Repeat the step above for Actions, Aliases and Queries
- This will insure that all the base scripts are activate
3. Once you've done that do an iisreset and login.
4. If it still fails, try login as a different user
5. If all that fails let us know what error massage you get in the event viewer.

Hi Duncan,

Today the problem has mysteriously vanished and I am able to log in. I know this will recur in the future, so I'm wondering what I can do to get around it faster than waiting around for two days (which sort of puts a dent in my development schedule). Would unregistering and reregistering the slxweb.dll work? Or is there some other way to "restart" the DLL?

To get to the Configuration Check in Web Manager, do I pull down the "Tools" menu, select the "Profile/Server Configuration" option, expand the "SalesLogix" group, highlight the web server, and click on the "Verify current configuration" icon to the left of the lightning bolt icon? When I try to do that, I get the following three warnings:

"Cannot log into the system with username 'WebDLL': (1314) 'A required privilege is not held by the client.'"
"Cannot open the short date format key in the registry for 'WebDLL'"
"Invalid short date format: ''. Must be a 4-digit year."

What can I do to resolve these?

Thank you very much for your help,
- Kent

You're getting errors as if it's never worked but if you've been able to make changes then it should have at some point. My knowledge of the web client goes back to 4.0 and it has come a long way since then so I may not even be hitting anywhere near the problem but here goes:
1) Sounds like you've never logged in as WebDLL on the computer. This had to be done for the SLXService user to create both the profile and the user portion of the registry.
2) No profile = no registry = no short date key for the user. There would be one for the MACHINE which it should default to as that is generally how it should work but there must be some reason for omitting that.
3) Older versions of Windows (typically pre-Y2K) defaulted to a 2 year digit format but that should have changed for Windows 2000 and beyond, which is the lowest version of Windows SalesLogix now installs on. Basically put it should be using 4 digit years but it sounds like this is heavily related to #2.

The only thing I can think of that can cause all 3 symptoms is registry corruption for the WebDLL user. You should be able to login as WebDLL but that may or may not indicate a registry problem. All it can take is for one portion to corrupt to cause all 3 messages and can be as simple as one key. RegMon from SysInternals would be nice to use here as you should be able to monitor the registry to see which key it's trying to access and why it isn't returning the correct value. You may not get anywhere with the information but at the very least you'll know where it's searching and roughly what it should be finding.

In addition to Jeremy's information try this:

Log into the server as WebDll, go to Control Panel: Regional Settings |Date
Select the format according to the install directions and bounce the machine.

Kent,

You mentioned wanting to use the title in the lookup. Did you actually ever put a <#FIELD> tag on the conconmpl? Specifically the <#FIELD name=contitle>? If so, that's probably what broke it when making your customization (I'm confused on not being able to log in).

You can only use <#FIELD> tags on detail templates that have a maintable specified. If you put an alias that has a table other than the maintable specified it will break.

I tried in the statement of conconmpl and this works:

but if I substitue a real alias (I had no alias named blah) such as "contitle", it blows up immediately. If you've set your default page to be the contact advanced lookup, you can login, but you'll never get to the advanced search screen because the alias is throwing an error.

To do what you want, you'll need to add this in your HTML some of which has been done, some of which has been suggested or you've done:
1) add the following somewhere in the HTML <#PL list="title" name="title" style="width:150px">
2) Modify the query con_conmpl to have a new parameter that is the contact title with "Use Value as Literal" checked and the value of :title for the search parameter.
3) Update the QBEItems to have a new value called "title": QBEItems[9] = "title";
4) If you're removing "Owner", be sure to remove the item from the con_conmpl query, as well as the <#PL> in the HTML template and the value from the QBEItems array. If you're adding Title and keeping owner, just make sure you add to your array.

The SLX web client can be a bit tricky, but be patient.

As for not logging in, I have twice in six years seen something happen where the slxweb.dll got physically corrupted. I could flush, iisreset, reboot (client and server), clear IE files, with no luck. As soon as I replaced the physical slxweb.dll file with a copy from the CD or another server, it worked. Twice in six years. Cost me three days the first time, and a few hours the next. Even though your system is working again, I thought I'd share that bit of hard earned experience so others might benefit.

Jeff
