We have received a request from a client that wishes to access SLX and our custom bundles via multiple devices - Pocket PC 2003, Windows Mobile 5.0, Palm Treo, and Blackberry. I have been researching all types of solutions including SLX Mobile, Corum, VAULTUS, GoodLink, and integrated Microsoft technology. My problem is that I would prefer to develop a single solution/ui that could be ported to all of these devices. In all cases, separate projects need to be maintained for each device type ehich causes a maintenance nightmare when global changes occur. I was looking into the SLX Web Client and Web Phone features, but I cannot seem to find out how much the Web Phone can be customized.
I have been considering a solution that involves a comprehensive web service that can be accessed by ASP/ASP.NET web pages that could be ported to the micro-browsers supported in each of these devices. Unfortunately, my knowledge of developing pages for micro-browsers is currently non-existent and am curious if anyone out there has done anything like this and if it even seems possible. I am under the gun to come up with a solid solution soon, so any feedback is incredibly appreciated and I would be more than happy to share my resultant code with anyone who can provide me some good insight and aid.

Thanks,
Don Poggio, MCSD, SLXD6

The ASP.NET Mobile controls do allow for adaptive rendering between various mobile devices. While you will be able to share a great deal of code bwtween the PC-targeted ASP.NET application and the mobile device targeted web apps, there's no 100% good way to write the app once and have it render perfectly for all platforms. That's not to say that you're developing things multiple times, but you will need to ensure you've separated any actual logic from the front end. You can detect the device you're rendering on and display the appropriate page (the pc version of the page or the mobile version of it). The mobile version can be smart enough to handle the various mobile devices and the pc page will be as any asp.net page. The key is to build the code behind the pages separately so you can wire it up to the front end at runtime.

Not a terribly bad route to take, it just takes some good planning and designing to minimize the need for duplicating logic and code.

Thanks for the additional info, Ryan. It looks like the ASP.NET Mobile solution is most likely the way to go since you can put device-specific handlers within the same code. Thanks again. I will let everyone know how it goes as I move forward.

Dave,

depending on your internal implementation details I would not suggest using a webservice inside the organization. As Ryan eluded to earlier it is better to have a seperate application layer (Business objects, data manangement. Rules validation) and such and just manage the rendering of the forms differently within the ASP.net mobile web application. Things to understand is that not all devices support all functionality and when writing to support many devices you really have to choose the lowest common functional set. If your customer is requesting more advanced processing you may be SOL on some of the devices as they are really enhanced at the will of the manufacturer/OEM.
