I have a client who can't change their IE settings to "Check for
newer pages" on "every time I visit the page", as it causes a conflict with another web based application they are using.
Unfortunately post 6.2.3 (new group manager) this is an essential setting.

Does anyone know of another way around this?

You could try enabling 'content expiration' in the HTTP Headers section of the website properties?
