Is it possible to have a development website pointing to a dev database and a live website pointing to the live database both on the same web host server? I have been reading the web implementation guide back and forward and see no mention of this scenario. I have a working site saleslogix.mysite.com:1025 for our live database. I created a second site testarea.mysite.com:1030 manually. Through web manager I logged into the dev database and setup a profile and server but I do not see all packages. Only a few. And I connot attach to the website from IE. I may need to use an alternate IP in IIS for this site to correct this when I get a chance. I am more worried about the fact that I cannot see all of the packages such as BASE. Has anyone else done this? What am I missing. For the moment, I just setup the dev site on my workstation.

Yep, I must have over 10 sites running on one machine, all of these just have separate Port numbers running on the same IP.
If you can't see the packages the chances are, you haven't installed the web bundle on your test site!

Hope this help

While you can set up multiple web servers on a single computer with different port numbers, you need to also consider where the virtual directories are pointing. It would not be much benefit to have multiple servers pointing at the same directory structure. For the first web host you install, the virtual directories are located at C:\Program Files\SalesLogix\Web Components.

I would propose that you consider using a virtual machine for the dev server. That way, you can have a distinct development environment.

You hit it. Even though I had it installed, I reinstalled the web bundle and the packages appeared. Thanks! Another question to make sure I am doing this the right way because I am now getting login issues. with both sites active. I have the 2 sites in IIS. SLX on port 1025 and TestArea on port 1030. the are using the same folders in C:\Program Files\SalesLogix\Web Components\... I logged into the live DB with webmanager and setup a profile named slx and a server named slx pointing to the live db, the IIS site SLX and port 1025. That works. Then I log into the test db with webmanager and setup a profile testarea and server testarea pointing to the test db, IIS site TestArea and port 1030. Now I cannot get to either site until I delete the testarea server and profile and reset IIS. I get General Login exception occured. If I am doing this wrong PLEASE wack me over the head and straighten me out!

Thanks Tom. I wondered about the virtual directories during all this. Would you happen to have any quick instructions on how to set this up for SLX web host? I can't even seem to get it to work the other way, so maybe I will have better luck this way.

What I do is as follows;
1. Create a link in the connection manager for each of your dev dbs
2. Create a SLXWEB folder, then put all your dev sites under that i.e , c:\slxweb\Dev1, c:\slxweb\Dev2 each of these folders contain a separate copy of the web components.
3. Then login to the web client for Dev1 delete the profile and server that is there, then create a new one.
4. Set up the profile as normal with your webdll user
5. Add a server and don't fill in any details, just hit the lighting button, give your site a name "Dev1" and a unique port number, click next, it will show you the webdll user click next. Then double click on each of the virtual directories that it will create and change them from pointing at the standard location to your new location i.e C:\Program Files\SalesLogix\web components\slxweb to c:\slxweb\Dev1\slxweb, then click OK and it will create the site for you.
6. Close profile and server config and then open it again.
7. Then go to the server part and select your newly created website, give it a title, propagate the settings and finally run the Configuration check, if that’s Ok you are done.

Simply repeat for each dev site.

I created c:\slxweb\Dev1. Then I logged into the web client for Dev1 (profile and server already deleted). I setup the profile as normal and added a server hit the lighting button. Named it Dev1 and port number 1030 (live on 1025) and checked the port. Clicked Next twice. Then I double clicked on each of the virtual directories that it will create and change them to c:\slxweb\Dev1\slxweb. What about MSADC? I left it alone. I closed profile and server config and then reopened and gave it a title and propped the settings. The directories were not found. It said the site was created successfully. But there was no files in the new location. Was I suppose to copy them from C:\Program Files\SalesLogix\web components\slxweb? I removed all I did and started over copying the structure from web components. Then the directories were found. I ran the Configuration check and it passed. But now when I try to logon to the live site I get "system failed to initialize properly" and the Dev1 site I get the logon screen but then on login I get "General login exception occured."

Thanks for all your help. I don't know what I am doing wrong here.

I believe I had this error before. Try redo-ing the ADO Connection within the web manager and make sure that the connections within the connection manager is correct.

on another note. If you are uninstalling and reinstalling the web multiple times then you might want to clean up some junk in the registry and component services. I find that with hanging junk, it sometimes interfare with your web client. Especially the component services.

Duncan, I just wanted to thank you again for sharing your method here. After a few months of using this it works great. Far better than the method SalesLogix suggests.

Keep up the great posts and my hat is off to Ryan for all the wonderful sites he spends countless energy and time on!

No Worries mate glad to help.

And you're right about Ryan sites, for me this is the easiest forum to use and knowledgeable people actually answer your post even if it’s not straight forward.
I've noticed more and more people using this site and I think it’s going to be a real grower

I know what you are saying!
I started using this site just to post my problems but soon found myself reading all the post daily. I have learned so much about things I have not even had the need to do yet!
It is a real inspiration having tools available like this. I am a customer and not a partner. When I first started developing I paid for the SDK support so I could get answers from SDK support. I quickly learned they did not know either. Then one of the support calls the guy was reading me a message explaining what to do. I asked him to forward that in an email thinking he was reading from a technote in their system. He emailed me a link to slxdeveloper.com! I registered and dropped my SDK support! Why pay SLX to read this site when I can get the info first hand!

Really wonderful!
Finally I've been able to create a DEV environment without having to fire-up another virtual machine!

Many thanks!
