Hi,

I have not done much web development. Very proficient with the developing on the LAN client, both legacy and active script.

What technologies/skills would you recommend for becoming proficient developing on the new web platform?

From searching around this forum, I have found asp.net 2.0 and Ajax. What others?

Any recommended resources would also be appreciated.

Thanks,
Daryl Probetts

IMO, you can get by with no Ajax knowledge at all and minimal ASP.NET skills. Of course, the more ASP.NET skills you have the easier time you'll have when you run into problems.

The main area to focus on for learning IMO is C# or VB.NET (If you currently don't use either then I'd suggest C# since some areas, such as LoadActions only allow for C# - however many areas do allow for either C# or VB.NET)

Unfortunately I have yet to figure out all of the ins and outs of the Application Architect, so I am using Visual Studio to make all kinds of changes to a 7.2 web test environment. I just realized I don't see any version control within the Application Architect that was in the desktop Architect. Am I missing something or are they expecting that I would setup either CVS or VSS for the site? If this is the case how will new patches be rolled out without clobbering my updates?

Thanks for any advice or insight.

Yes. Nick Galler has posted how to use version control with SLX here: http://blog.nico-universe.net/2008/01/using-subversion-with-slx-72.html

In 7.2.2 there is a new feature that allows you to install a bundle and merge/preserve with existing updates. Haven't really put that feature through the paces to know how well it works.

Adding to Ryans thoughts, though knowing some of the web technologies is not as nessacary when you first get started it can become invaluable when you start to get the more complex requirements comming in. Also learning some of the framework components will make life much easier. Such as NHibernate, and also Dependency Injection. Generics are also used extensively in the framework and having a handle on them gives you a leg up.
