Invalid User Name or Password After UpgradeYour last visit to this thread was on 1/1/1970 12:00:00 AM

Ok, got one here that doesn’t make any sense…

I upgraded a 6.2.3 database up to 7.2.2. I connected from my dev. machine just fine and did a fair amount of web customizations. From there I took the database over to the clients side for testing. I restored the database to SQL-2005 (It was on SQL-2000) installed all the 7.2 apps and SPs. I then did my connection manager connection and it tested just fine. I then went to log into the Admin and created the Datalink. When I go to test that it fails with ‘Invalid User or Password’, ok, fine… I retype in a dozen time to make sure it wasn’t fat-fingered. Same error.

Now I go back to my dev environment and test the connection again. Yup can still log in. Well, I go to another machine in our domain and try to connect to the database (the one I can connect to in dev. on the other machine) and get the same Invalid user pass. I try it a couple more times to rule out the fat-finger. Still same error.

So long story short: I get Invalid Pass on login at the clients site that is on SQL-2005, no matter what machine I am on. I can log in on our site (SQL-2000) from one machine, but any other machine throws Invalid Pass as well.

So things I tried so far.
•Dropped Datalink and re-added
•Dropped Connection Manager link and re-added.
•Moved the location of the Connection Manager Link.
•Made sure backwards compatibility tools were installed (on the SQL-2005 environment)
•Made sure the Client Network Utilities were installed (on the SQL-2005 environment)
•Tried test connecting the Datalink using a user (not Admin)
•Called support and they can replicate the issue, but do not have a solution yet.

This one has me scratching my head going hu?

Any thoughts???

Hi Ken

Weird stuff.

What steps did support take to replicate this issue?

Cheers

They restored the database and tried our current user\pass and got the error. They then reset the adim password and still got the error. Not sure what else they tried, but there was no resolve...

The only thing they could come up with is that something bad happened during the upgrade. They requested that I start the upgrade over, then try to bring back all my cusomizations in peices to the new database. This is just our test upgrade (Dev) for them, I wish I knew what happened so it doesn't happen again when we do it in Prod.

Grrr,

Have you tried logging in from the server itself, rather than a client machine?

Are you using a SQL Native Client connection?

On the SQL2005 environment I can connect to QA using sysdba just fine. The client side on the 2005 environment I have client network utiilites installed along with the backwards compatibility tools. I make the Connection Manager connection through the 'SQL Native Client' (So yes to your quesiton). Connection Manager test connects fine. Data Link Manager fails on the logon.

Back at homestead (SQL2000), I have one machine I can connect from which happens to be the same machine as the connection manager. I try to connect from a different machine and I get a login error. I switch machines for the connection manager and it test connectes fine again. But I can still only get a datalink working from that original machine.

FYI: I dont think the version of SQL has anything to do with this at all, just throwing it out there.

Makes no sense to me... Doesn't seem logical, but there it is...

I dont know what else to try so I'm starting the upgrade process again and see what happens. I'll keep you posted...

Very odd.

Not sure whether it will show anything, but you could try running SLXProfiler (all applications) when you are trying to log in ...

I have run out of ideas for now. Let's hope it was just a glitch. Please post again if you find out what caused this.

Cheers

Already tried Profiler.... The client doesn't get far enough to establish a connection to start logging anything.

On a side note I just got done with the initial upgrade to 7.2 and I am able to log of from everywhere. Now it's time to start bringing over peices and parts and keep my fingers croseed. /sigh

I'll keep you posted.

Ken,

There are several things that could be going on.
You got to figure out the Library being used, the settings on the connection, etc.

First thing first:
IF server is 2005, all clients should have the SQL 2K5 native client.

Second:
On the SLX App Server, under the Connection Manager, make sure you click to "Allow Saving Password" if your connection is successful.
If under Connection Manager you fail to establish a connection, then probably SQL is secured in such a way that you can't connect.

You may need to look at which library is configured as the default library, and/or the settings on the SQL Surface Area Configuration.

I don't think any of these suggestions can be the reason, because

a) The problem occurs on SS2000 too, and
b) Connection Manager connection always works, it is the datalink connection that is failing.

Found it....

This error was cause by not having the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable installed, and having a security wrapper around the SlxOleDB Provider.

I ran into this problem again on the database I upgraded. I was able to log on from anywhere before, but as soon as I applied my SlxOleDB Provider wrapper I was only able to log into the client from one machine (because it had the Redistributable) After I installed the Redistributable on the other machines, I was able to log in just fine.

Here are the links you need if you run into this problem later down the road.
