Outlook integration causing Outlook to hang?
Posted: 31 May 06 12:26 PM

fiogf49gjkf0d Hi all,
I'm trying to track down an intermittent problem some of my users are experiencing in which their Outlook 2003 clients are very slow to open or do not open at all.
One of these users swears that the issue first appeared following our recent SalesLogix upgrade to version 6.2 and logging in to her SalesLogix client /may/ solve her problem (it seemed to work once).
Has anyone experienced anything similar? If so, what was your solution?
Thanks in advance.
Nate

fiogf49gjkf0d Nathan,
I've had similar trouble with our 2000 clients. We are running SLX 6.2 as well. What seemed to correct the issue for me was making sure I followed these steps in setting up a user.
1) Install outlook and all updates and service packs (make sure no instances of SLX are installed) 2)install slx and all service packs 3) (re)register both the slmn.dll and slxab32.dll
I know the order may not seem important but updating oulook after SLX had no effect.
Hope this helps.

fiogf49gjkf0d Thanks for your response.
Unfortunately, a complete reinstall Outlook is not a viable option for me, nor is reinstalling SLx (our SLx is a 3rd party buildout). But your post gives me a better context for what's going on. I just wish I could reliably reproduce the problem.
I wonder if it's a known issue w/ Outlook integration that has been fixed in subsequent SLx releases.

fiogf49gjkf0d Have you tried and installed the intellisync_feature_pack_for_slxv62, yet?
According to Sage, the conduit that SalesLogix use to communicates with Outlook is the IntelliSync, and appearantly there are issues with it and so they comes out with two fixes. One for the v6.2 and the other for v6.2.x. Make sure you download and install the right one for your version.
Give that a try. ltbui |

tadalafil mylan prezzo acquistare cialis 5 mg go fiogf49gjkf0d Hi ltbui,
Thanks for your response.
It appears to me that in addition to Intellisync, SalesLogix uses two add-ins: "SalesLogix Mail Notification" and "SalesLogix Outlook Add-in" to communicate w/ Outlook. To my knowledge, none of our employees have made use of Intellisync, so I am doubtful that this is the issue.
The third party that built out our version of SLx has not created a compatible version of Service Pack 4 as of yet, so I am guessing that this could contribute to issues that my users are having with Outlook. If anyone can back me up on this (or explain why I am on the wrong track) I would greatly appreciate it.
Cheers,
nate

fiogf49gjkf0d We have the same problem with Outlook. I have installed the Intellisync Feature Pack v6.2.0 on the client computers, and that doesn't make any difference. The only good news is that if you blow away the hung Outlook with Task Manager, run Outlook again, and say "no" to safe mode, Outlook comes up just fine. |

fiogf49gjkf0d Our users have remote databases. However, I have seen Outlook hang when the laptop is in our office directly connected to our corporate LAN and when they are running remotely but accessing the Exchange server through RPC or through a VPN. |

fiogf49gjkf0d The machines are not remotes. I know this looks like classic Windows mapped/network drive hangtime, but I don't think it is in this case.
What I think may be the issue is this: As I mentioned earlier, our installation of SLx is a 3rd party build-out of the software. Consequently, we don't have the latest service pack (SP4 I believe) because the build-out company is still producing a compatible version. They tell me that part of SP4 addresses Outlook/SLx integration, and that when they ship their SP4 to us, it may resolve my problems.
So I guess we're just waiting it out. If anyone has any additional input, I'd of course appreciate it; otherwise I'll just sit on my hands for a while.
Cheers, nate

Us too, we left cached mode on when upgrading to Office 2003 from 2000, and that's when we started having problems with hanging on startup. Taking the users out of cached mode fixed this problem (and also problems with syncing appointments) -Al |

fiogf49gjkf0d Yes... having the 'Cached Exchange Mode' checked will cause this issue. I don't know why, but unchecking it resolves the issue.
Also to note... SLX 6.2.1 (and maybe 6.2.2?) is not certified for use with Office 2003 service pack 2. Causes a lot of QueMessage Errors. Apparently Microsoft too something out of the DLL that made the DLL not backward compatible. Geee, what happened to practicing what you preach???

fiogf49gjkf0d The changes to Outlook were for security reasons, which in my book always trumps backcompat (MS doesn't NEARLY do this enough). It's a shame they had to break things but it means less spam and malware which is definately a good thing. The problem is usually that SalesLogix takes so long after it's released to produce a patch as if they don't touch anything MS until it's out of beta/RC status (this coming from outside observation of things like Windows Server 2003, XP SP2 and Outlook 2000 SP1 which eerily followed the same pattern). I'm sure there are actual reasons I will never be privvy to but these kinds of things are definately not a 1 way street. |

buy abortion pill barcelona buy abortion pill barcelona fiogf49gjkf0d David, et al.: Hey, cool, thanks for the feedback. I've turned off Cached Exchange Mode for the coworker experiencing the startup hangs. Hopefully this will solve his problem.
Thomas: We (fortunately) don't use NAV, so that's probably not the issue, although I wouldn't be surprised if most or all commercial antivirus suites did something similar. That's generally how those programs operate. One would think SLx would have some sort of relationship with AV companies so they could integrate with Outlook w/o getting their toes stepped on.
John: We are using 6.2.1, so I'm sure the compaibility issues are present for us. Luckily, the employee in question doesn't need the SLx<-->Outlook integration, so I just turned it off (killed the two Outlook add-ins mentioned in my earlier post). Looks like this is more of a straight Outlook thing than a SLx thing. :P
Thanks to everyone for their input. It was much appreciated.
Cheers,
Nate

fiogf49gjkf0d DEFECT: 1-46156 - Outlook 2003 SP2 hangs with SalesLogix Integration Steps to duplicate the issue: 1. Install Windows XP Pro SP2 2. Install Outlook 2003 SP2 and ensure that "Use Cached Exchange Mode" is on 3. Install SalesLogix 6.2.3 including hotfixes up to Hotfix 12 (6.2.4 was also tested with the same results) 4. Launch Outlook and make sure the SalesLogix Address Book and SendSLX buttons are functioning. 5. Close and Reopen Outlook. At this point, Outlook will hang when launching. If you disable Cached Exchange Mode, Outlook will open correctly. If you unregister the SalesLogix dll's, Outlook will work successfully with Cached Exchange Mode. If only 1 of the DLL's is registered at a time, Outlook launches successfully. With both DLL's registered and Cached Exchange Mode on, Outlook hangs
