For compliance reasons we need to retire the Windows 2003 server that our 11 user SLX 8 is running on. It is also running SQL Server 2005 and IIS for SLX web. It has 4GB RAM and a quad core Xeon running on a mirrored pair of SAS 15k drives. Peformance is adequate.
We have a Dell R720 dual socket 6 core machine (12 cores) with 32GB RAM that we want to move the installation to. The only function this server is being used for is file server (used to be the Exchange Server). This macine has a separate RAID 10 SAS in addition to the boot drives.
Seems like a no brainer to move over to the newer server for SQL Server and SLX but....it's also the domain controller. I know MS support hates when apps are runnign on DC's but it's the only server left after removing the 2003 servers.
Normally I would use storagecraft to back up the DC, then wipe it and install just the Hyper-V role and then do a bare metal storagecraft restore of the DC as a VM and then install a second Server 2012 VM for SLX but management wont tolerate the downtime required for that.
Thanks in advance for any advice on this.
