We are currently on SLX 6.1.1, and we are use SLX support extensively. We are currently in the early stages of upgrade development for migration to v7.

I am looking for a method to restrict access to a certain Product to certain users. It's a 'top-secret' product, and only select users from each department should be able to view this product. We need to be able to control access at a user-level, for example - only 1 technician from the Customer Service team should be able to assign this product to an account, see this product at the account level, create tickets for this product, etc.

Because we are in the midst of development, we are not making any large-scale changes to our existing 6.1 clients or DB. Are there any user-level security methods or filters that we can use to restrict access to a specific product?

I'm hoping for an administrative solution, rather than a developmental solution.

I agree with RJ, for what it's worth. The development shouldn't be too terrible but it's going to have to be well thought out to make sure you cover all your bases.

I'd build a special "Top Secret" team and then setup the code to look for the security ID for that team. That should make administration a bit easier in the future. You'll have to add a field for each product to mark it Top Secret or not and give your admin and perhaps the Top Secret admin access to that field. If you are going to build this you should do so in such a way that it can be used again in the future.

As far as I know the product table has no security access built into it so you'll have to add that. Similar to the account owner. Top Secret products would have your "TS" team ID and all others would have the "Everyone" ID or NULL or something.

I just threw that together in my head so there are likely mistakes in my logic but I wouldn't think it would be a terrible job, but not for a novice.

Troy one of the simplest approaches might be to use a lookup restrict filter on the screens that use a product lookup. You should be able to programtically determine the current user and then set the lookup property's conditions to restrict the lookup accordingly. Check out Ryan's post here for a sample that might help:

I have used this approach to selectively display information from the product tables. It works well but does not restrict what is visible in groups. You may need to hide the tickets and/or accounts also to keep things secret.
