I wanted to see if anyone is working/has worked with SalesLogix in a virtualized environment. We recently implemented VMware ESX 3.5 on our main SQL box, and are slowly having to add back array for Db's, temp Db, and soon the Tlogs. Pro/Cons, curious more than anything.

SalesLogix 6.2.6
SQL Server 2000 SP 4

Hi Anthony

Yes, plenty of people have done this very successfully with no issues. However, no matter what anyone says - still recommend *not* virtualising SQL Server itself - everything else no problem but best to leave SQL non-virtualised.

Absolutely no reason not to. Most of my SLX environments are virtual.

What would your reasoning be for not virtualizing SQL Server, short of MS saying not to?

Simply resources - virtualising a server is fine for simple system and tests. For full production systems you wouldn't want to as VM will contend with resources that SQL will also need.

Are you speaking of virtualized environments in general? ESX will not pull resources that would be allocated to the guest OS and associated applications.

I'd err on the side of caution and go all.

I am of the opinion that VM can be used in production environments including database server however not in a multi tenanted sql server instance scenario.

We use VM for our test and dev environments.

We recently moved away from VM's for our production.

Mostly because we are a very small shop with very limited resources. We simply don't have the knowledge in-house that we need to optimally use virtualization. We discovered that we spend less time on upkeep and maintenance on our non-VM servers vs. our VM servers.

Again, I stress that is because we don't have the expertise and our infrastructure/desktop guy does not want to acquire it.

We're running SalesLogix 7.2 (as well as our corporate ERP and several other corporate data tools) successfully in a fully virtualized environment (including MSSQL2005), using ESX 4, across three x64 clusters for load balancing and failover. The ESX4 upgrade happened recently, we were running fine under 3.5 prior to this as well. Just realized this post is a month old, so my first post is also a necro, but... Hopefully useful nonetheless.

-- edit --
Make that a year and a month, someone else already necro'd it! Oi.

I am on SLX 7.2 and the clients use a stand alone TS. I hope to virtualize that soon. But my SQL box and App box(SalesLogix Server) are both on ESXi boxes. No issues at all.
