Remote Office on SQL Server 2005?
Posted: 24 Aug 07 3:01 PM

I know running a remote office on SQL Server 2005 has been discussed somewhat in other threads, and I tried to read through them to pull out a definite answer, but I couldn't - maybe I missed something.
But is this something that is alright to do? Other than, "It's not officially supported," has anyone tried it and had any problems? Would there be any problems doing this? I've avoided it because of "rumors," but it's to the point that I need to find out. Personally, I don't know why it wouldn't work. I currently host the server on SQL Server2005, and I am running just fine so far.
I am the guy that asked about replication not too long ago, and I've been slow to investigate that option. That's going to be the alternative to running a remote database on SQL Server 2005. It's looking like it won't be too simple, so I was hoping for the SLX remote database route. And I've learned one thing since that last discussion: someone recommended using mirroring, and I found that that method won't work. Database mirroring allows only one mirror and one witness, and the mirror can't be used unless there is a failure on the primary database - so only one database at a time in that system. Whoever it was, I want to thank them for at least their recommendation.
Thank you for your thoughts, Jeff |

Jeff I haven't read any of the other threads that you mentioned in your post but I can tell you that we currently have a customer that has 8 remote offices all running on Sql Server 2005 Standard Edition and we have not encountered any problems. We setup a UAT database for all of the Remotes to sync with and they have been using this environment for the last 8 weeks without any issues. Go live is in 2 weeks! |

You said it.. not supported. I won't install a client w/SQL2005 on an RO (or Express on an RU) pre v7.2 unless I get a full signed "release" that the assume full responsibility for anything that goes wrong.
If you call tech support on an issue.. you are SOL..
Answer.. upgrade to v7.2 and leave it all behind you. -- rjl |

..BTW.. I did not say one could not make it work... if one knows what one is doing.. but this is all "theory" of course -- rjl |

Ah, well, one DOES have a 7.2 install disk and was considering whether or not to upgrade anytime soon... I guess that's a good enough reason to do so. Thank you for your help RJL and Sasa. I was just worried that I would automatically get one of those "Database object not found" errors, or something like that. If it's been done successfully before, and if it's supported in 7.2, then my worries are alleviated.

Good for "One"
Read teh docs carefully when it comes to the who/what/how of custting remotes (RO and/or RU) w/7.2. The rules change depending on: A - What the main db engine is (2000/2005/Oracle) B - Where you cut (SQL Server, workstation) C - What the db engine is on the workstation
The bottom line.. for those who run MDSE/SQL2000 on RO/RU you can continue to uses them and nor worry about being forced to change... For those who want to change (or mix and match) you can also continue to do so.
