I am looking to stop contact.userfield1 from syncing out to my remote databases, if I change the sync field (from T to F) in synctabledefs will that prevent just that field from syncing? Can anyone see any problems with that?

Ian,

I don't know if your solution works, test test test. However here are a few other options you can explore:
1.) Edit the Profile attached to your users. Make userfield1 NA. (See Access Rights in Help)
2.) In DBManager, remove visible propery on field.

Data will still synch, but will not be viewable/touchable by end user.

Even if this stops changes from syncing to the remotes I suspect the field will still be populated when a new remote database is created.

I believe you are correct. You can test it pretty simply by creating a remote database but instead of running it now, do it later. This should create the RemoteDB_DTS.sql file in your SalesLogix\ folder where Administrator is located. You can then parse that file to verify if the data will end up in the remote database or not. It's a fairly simple process but since I don't have any fields I know of in the database with this requirement I can't verify it on my end.

I take it you are talking about SECTABLEDEFS (there is no SYNCTABLEDFES
It looks like SalesLogix was designed to allow sync control on a filed/column basis.. in fact it was not. Sync works at the table/row level.
