We're about to upgrade our SLX from 7.2 over to 7.5 and want to get it running under SQL Server 2008. My understanding is that we need to upgrade SLX first under SQL 2005 and then move it to SQL 2008 due to compatibility issues with Pre-7.5 versions and SQL 2008. Other than that two step process, are there any special "gotchas" that I should be aware of?

If you have network users (and/or on all your Servers with SLX Components):
- Install the SQL 2K8 client.

On the App Server, after moving the DB:
- Reconfigure the Connection to use the Latest SQL Client (and point to a new SQL Server if necessary).

another thing to add is that if you use remote users install SQL express first and use Saleslogix as the named instance for ease to attach the database, using the in-built Saleslogix attachement program. And also install the SQL 2008 B.C. on all the machines using Saleslogix. I found without it some problems do arise.

On thing that caught me this week. If you do move to 2008 (and there is no reason not to) then you should use the new native client (v10). However, if you do this - you will find that the following occurs when you attempt to create remote user databases:

"Provider cannot be found. It may not be properly installed"

To fix this, you must install the SQL2005 Native Client on the pc/server running admin (where you are generating the remote dbs) - as it will use the SQL2005 Native Client to gen the dbs and not the SQL2008 native client.
Both Native Clients can co-exist without an issue. But, both are required on the server (but not the local PC/LAN clients - this should just be the SQL2008 NC).

I can verify this - wasted hours trying to figure out what was wrong recently on this very issue.

What I also found is that, if you upgrade your remotes to SS 2008 Express, there are quite a few prerequisites that make the SLX remote install quite a long and painful process. If they're on XP, that includes:

1) .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
2) Windows Installer 4.5
3) Powershell 1.0
4) (finally) SLX client software
5) SS2008 Express
6) SS2005 Backwards Compatibility
7) Cut & attach remote db.

SS2005 Express is a much quicker install process for your remotes on XP.
