Account - Contact Relationship

fiogf49gjkf0d HELP!
We’ve been working on bringing on more SalesLogix users from another internal department. With that, we are making some modifications to the system to accommodate them. One of the business requirements that they have is that they want to be able to add contacts to multiple accounts. The only way we can do that (I think) in our current model is to add the contact to one of the accounts and create associations with the other accounts.
The problem is that this won’t work for them. They need all the functionality, reporting, security etc… to work in a true Many to Many relationship. I was wondering if anyone has any clients that work on a system like this and if maybe you could shed some light on what changes you made to accomplish this. I can't see any other way than to totally overhaul the system which is not something i'm about to do.
Thanks in advance, Zeph |

fiogf49gjkf0d What throws an even bigger wrench into things is the subscription/security model. Everything is tied to the account owner so by creating a contact that falls under multiple accounts, you run the risk of breaking security if for instance a remote doesn't have that account.
There are a couple of ways to go about tackling this. One is to simply create contact copies. When you link one contact to multiple accounts, it simply creates X number of contact records. This wouldn't break security or anything but it would bloat the database significantly. The other alternative would be to use a lookup table, something that'll let you define which contacts belong to which accounts. Associations may be able to handle this but I would think you'd need something with a little more leverage just in case you need to tweak something.
Personally, I'd hate to be in your shoes. This is not really easy or trivial by any means yet the requirements still stand.
Good luck. |
