SLX Remote crashes on shut down of PCYour last visit to this thread was on 1/1/1970 12:00:00 AM

I have noticed on some laptops that have the remote client installed that it will crash when I shut down the computer.

The SLXLoggingServer.exe is what's crashing...I have the most up to date service pack and HF2 installed.

I am just curious if this is a known issue or just happens to affect a small percentage.

The laptops are all running Windows XP SP2.

Can you explain to us how it "crashes" or what you see when it "crashes"?

Sorry, seems to be a component of the Remote client that's crashing on exit.

The message pops up as soon as it's about to shut down to restart or power off and the computer will reboot in a few seconds before I can actually read it all.

The message says SLXLoggingServer.exe - Application Error and then in the body of the window has some and could not be "read". Sometimes the message says it can't write to it too.

I just remove PC-Cillin 2006 which I suspect to be the cause since that program would crash on exit as well. Since I removed it the problem doesn't appear but I can't leave this computer unprotected and we're licensed for that program only... I only have that to run as a virus scanner and nothing more.

Harvey,

It's OK that the SLXLoggingServer.exe is shutting down. That is natural. It would be nice to have the exact error message.

Look in the application event log on the troubled machine. I am positive you can find the exact error message in there. Find it and post your findings.

I understand that the programs would shut down but it's not normal when it has Application Error messages popping up shutting down the PC.

I am thinking it's not the install, not having PC-Cillin 2006 in there the message doesn't pop up. I assume virus protection was preventing the application from doing whatever it needed on shutdown.

It does the same thing with PC-Cillin 2007. I can't imagine other people don't get this message unless it's just this particular software. I'll try AVG free ware version. I never really like Trendmicro's crappy products...

It's so late in the shutdown process that it doesn't seem to be logged in the Event Viewer. Nothing in there reference SLXLoggingServer.exe or anything SLX for that matter w/ errors.

1) My VM development server has this problem sometimes. It's happened since 6.2. 7.0 and now 7.2 are affected. We're on SP1 now. The VM is a Windows XP Pro box which can run all of the server components. My production server is a Windows Server 2003 machine and has yet to produce similar symptoms.
2) Not every remote in my office has had it, but at least 1 person since 6.2.
3) It happens late in the shutdown process so there is no eventlog catch.
4) The error message is akin to "unable to read memory at xxxxx" and is *completely useless to anyone here*, or probably even Sage for that matter.
5) If the user does NOT click OK or Cancel, the computer *will not shutdown*. Had someone not notice it and almost destroy their laptop because it was kept inside their laptop bag. I may have completely unruly users that can't take 2 seconds to make sure everything's alright but this is the ONLY software that does it. Remove SalesLogix, problem solved.
6) I've yet to query my one Vista user but to my knowledge at LEAST 3/5 of my remotes have the problem. Apparently I'm getting better at producing it but not *fixing it*.
7) The problem is completely random. I can shutdown 5 times w/o a hitch but that 6th time would produce it.
8) Sometimes you won't get the popup but a Windows "ding" sound telling you something screwed up on shutdown. It happens almost constantly in my VM.
9) Anti-virus software likely doesn't matter. We use Symantec Corp Ed. 10.1 and I have excluded the Docs and Settings\...\SalesLogix\Cache and Sync directories, as well as the SQL Data directory just to be thorough. My VMs don't even *use* antivirus, so I've completely eliminated it as a suspect.
10) Since the only way I can take a screenshot would be in the VM I'll try to reproduce it.

Here's my theory. The service gets into a state where it does not gracefully shutdown. It's probably triggering Data Execution Prevention in XP because this same user was on Windows 2000 Pro before but I can't confirm it was affecting them then. Autosync may be part of the problem as it could be trying to synchronize when it's shutting down but the one user that has been affected since 6.2 synchronizes manually (dillegently I might add).

Because this problem is so random, I can almost guarantee Sage either hasn't caught it, doesn't know about it, or doesn't have an adequate way of reproducing it. Hell, even *I* can't reproduce it easily. The best thing I can do is package up my huge VM and show it off but I have a lot of sensitive information in it so that's kinda out of the question (not to mention it's upwards of 10 gigs because of the base clone + updates + office + updates + ... you get the point)

I can easily instruct someone on building the VM though, considering I do nothing special. I use Windows XP Pro, Office 2003, NO Antivirus!, SQL Express (MSDE for 6.2 and 7.0), and instead of an Active Directory domain I use the local computer. I've built 3 VMs: 6.2, 7.0, and 7.2 and they all produce the "ding" on shutdown notification. It's annoying but the computer shuts down without intervention. The shutdown message has happened for 6.2 and 7.2 that I can recall but that could just be because we barely used 7.0.

I'm going to see if turning off DEP for SLXLoggingServer has any effect at all but that is the last thing I think I can try.

I just had this one user who had a Dell X1 laptop that did this frequently. Another person with a X1 didn't have the issue or those Latitude D610 or D600 and even desktops with remote clients from their homes. They all Windows XP with the latest patches.

Besides that hotfix 2 is there anything else that would apply to Remote clients installations?

It doesn't matter now since not many users use SLX remotely so that's a big headache off my shoulder.

I doubt the hardware matters either. One remote is a Dell XPS Gen 1 laptop. The other remote is a Vostro 1500. We have an *identical* Vostro 1500 that is reporting *no* problems whatsoever and the only difference is slight variations in user software.

When I thought about it more, DEP isn't the problem. The default is to turn DEP on for *only* MS Products so SLXLoggingServer isn't bound by DEP rules.

I *did* have a broken install where the SalesLogix Client.cfg was pointing to the drive made on the server rather than where I place the client but I installed all of the peices carefully. The only thing that breaks to my knowledge is the automatic MSDE install doesn't take place after SalesLogix, you have to trigger it manually. What I might do as a test is resync the remote and blow off MSDE 2000 in lieu of SQL Express. One thing that everyone with the problem has in common, including the VM, is I use the default MSDE instance setup manually by myself instead of the named SALESLOGIX instance created by the automated installer. I made sure it was setup correctly with mixed mode and even turned on TCP/IP browsing so I could manage them from the server enterprise tools.

"Fortunately" for me at the moment our FTP server is hosed so I don't think any remotes will be hiccuping any time soon since they can't drop off or pick up their changes.

When you say "it doesn't matter now" does it mean you fixed it or you were worried about anti-virus software and that instructing users that "it's a bug, deal with it for now" is acceptable?
