With 7.2 we are running into some issues on 64 bit OS for the web server specifically. I think we'll try rolling that box back to 32 bit to stay in the supported range of things, but we also have an "App" server, running the standard Admin, Architect, etc. We aren't seeing issues, but is it a safe setup long term? Are there any positive or negative experiences out there?

Also, if the SQL server is 64 bit, in a 3 server environment (SQL, WEB, APP) what is the most efficient place to install the provider?

Thanks for any thoughts on this infrastructure.

Unfortunately, Todd, 64bit is not supported. We didnt think it would be an issue for the web product and tried but we had the same results you did. Your SQL server should be fine as 64 bit but I would not install any of the server components on anything but 32 bit servers until Sage has qualified them.

When it comes to installing the "provider" (I am guessing you mean the SalesLogix Server?), my opinion is that it doesnt really matter other than the 64 vs 32 bit concerns. It doesnt do much and should not be a bottleneck.

WOW (Windows on Windows) will run 32-bit stuff in 64 bit Windows. To the OS it's a 32-bit emulation that has no clue it's even being ran on a x64 cpu or in 64-bit mode.

The thing you have to be particularly concerned about for the web is the fact that there is both a 64bit and 32bit .NET framework. ASP.NET I believe binds to 32bit by default but it could easily get set to 64. I think .NET 64 will run 32 bit just fine but there are some quirks which is likely where the hiccup will be. Windows XP/2003 64-bit != Vista/2008 as there are a lot of improvements on the WOW front so that could be a factor too.

The sooner x64 is supported though, the better. It's hard not to stumble upon a dual-core x64 chip in new computers these days.
