Hello all

I have some ideas, but I would like to put this question out: "what would be a good setup (hardware/server) requirements to have 100 plus network users that will be using Salelogix LAN. Some suggestions have been to use a product called "citrix".

Thanks in advance

Hi Derek

If they are all using LAN then, yes, definitely consider Citrix or MS TermServer. It eases the rollout considerably (you run the app on the server and the user "sees" and controls the session using the Remote Desktop Client - very easy and very very easy to upgrade as you just do it once on the server and everyone is upgraded ! We fully recommend this over remote users nowadays and only recommend remote clients if the users are in countries where internet access if flaky or the salesperson really needs it when he's in his car/on the road or in a hotel in the middle of nowhere !!

But, for 100 users - you should discount 25-50% as they won't all use it concurrently (but, that's not the same as not allowing for). I'd recommend 1 server - Quad Xeon with 2 physical procs (giving 8 logical procs) and this is the database server. For the SQL Server - as this does the bulk of the work - ensure you optimise this entirely - use VERY fast disks (15k+ disks) in RAID5/6 formation or a SAN. The best performing you can get for your money basically ! You'll want 4-8Gb of memory and, therefore, 64bit or Enterprise version of Windows.

Then, as many citrix/ts's as you think is necessary (put in 2 or 3 to start). They go into a "farm" - whereby internal load-balancing determines which server the user is directed to based upon load-balancing. Ensure this has a dual/quad network that supports 802.3ad and a capable switch (802.3ad only works with 1Gbps+ NIC's).

Each TS/Citrix server should have 200Mb per user (so, at least 4Gb in each server) and, again, dual or quad procs for speed. Fast Disks etc. isn't needed on these servers - but RAID1 them for safety.

There are a bunch of other things you can do for performance of course, but the above is an outline. It all comes down to budget of course !

Regards
Mike
