Ok so I know it's possible to make 5.2 and 6.0 coexist on the same machine... is it possible to do the same with 6.1 and 6.2? Here's my scenario:

I am working with a client to upgrade their 6.1 system to 6.2. They currently use KnowledgeSync (KS) to transfer data between SLX and their AS/400. We have set up a pilot 6.2 system for testing before we roll it out live, and also have a "spare" AS/400 for testing purposes. Currently the KS box has the 6.1 OLEDB provider installed (it's their production system). Unfortunately, because KS is licensed to that specific machine, I can't just set up a test version of KS on another box, so I need to set up another app in KS to integrate between the test AS/400 and their 6.2 database, while leaving the 6.1 production stuff up and running. Well, I suppose I could set up another instance of KS using a demo license, but I'd like to be able to do this on the existing box. Anyone have any ideas on how to go about this? Thanks in advance!

No, it's not possible (due to clash of dll's). Best best is to use something like vmware/virtualpc and have don farber give you a dev license.

That's pretty much what I figured I was going to have to do, but I figured I'd confirm it first. Thanks for the quick answer Mike!

Hey everyone, check this out:

http://www.altiris.com/juice/svs/

This program allows you to install applications as a "layer" that is completely independent of the base OS installation. Layers can be enabled or disabled on the fly without disrupting the machine. It manages all registry settings and files associated with a given program installation and will help prevent "DLL Hell"... The really cool part though, is that it will allow you to install apps that would normally conflict with each other - on the same machine! Admittedly you can only use one or the other, but it's still a good step... want to check out the latest beta version of some application without breaking the version you've already got installed? Want to have a copy of SalesLogix 6.1 installed on the same machine as SalesLogix 6.2? Now you can!
There are two versions - a personal edition that is free for personal use, and an enterprise version that integrates with Altiris' other management products giving a total enterprise solution for application deployment and maintenance.

Very interesting. I had see juice before, but assumed it was just another virtualization drop in the bucket. It would be nice to not have to boot up an entire virtual OS just to test a single app. Sounds like this let's you just virtualize the app (and it's environment) separately from the OS.

Sounds cool. Have you tried it yet John?

John, let us know if this works. This would save tons of hassle! Right now we use Terminal servers for differnt versions.

To be honest, I haven't had a chance to play with the product at all, as I've been swamped with work (not that THAT's a bad thing
I'll see what I can do about getting it up and running this weekend though and let you know how it turns out.

Alrighty so I finally got a chance to play with the Software Virtualization. One word: COOOOOOL!
It works beautifully, and should theoretically even allow you to run multiple versions (i.e. 6.1 and 6.2) simultaneously with no conflicts. I haven't tried that part yet, but they have several articles dealing with doing that on the website - they use Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office apps as examples but it looks like it'll work with SLX also.
This software definitely needs to be in every SLX developer's toolkit. I was able to install both 6.1 and 6.2 into different layers (each virtualized application or set of apps is called a layer) and run either of them flawlessly. If you turn a layer off, it's as if the software has completely disappeared from the system, including files, registry entries, etc. etc.
Go to http://juice.altiris.com/svs and download a copy today - you'll love it!

John,
Sounds great. Can you share your configuration file?

How would you compare this with VMWare.

There isn't really a whole lot of configuration to it... once you've installed SVS, you use it to capture an installation, which then turns that install and its related changes to a layer. So you would start a capture process then install SLX6.1 for example... once it's done, you would deactivate that layer (making it completely disappear from the system and then do another capture for 6.2. You would then just activate the appropriate layer and off ya go!
As for comparing to VMWare, they're different beasts entirely, though they compliment each other quite well. While VMWare virtualizes an entire OS and everything that's installed on it, SVS only virtualizes the applications, but not lower-level stuff (they recommend against virtualizing things such as drivers).
One of the coolest things about SVS is that you can export a virtualized application. This lets you easily move/copy/reprovision software from one machine to another. Just copy the exported app to another machine, import the layer, activate it, and blam, you've got it fully installed and ready to go. Couple this with a deployment solution like Microsoft's SMS and you've got some real beauty.
Probably the biggest thing to watch out for, however, is data... it can be confusing at first how it gets handled. I would highly recommend creating one or more data layers to persist data files - if you don't, an app's data may be stored in the app's layer, meaning it would be lost of you reset the layer. There's tons more information (explained better than I can do) and some tutorials at the Juice site. Hope that helps!

Hi John - I've been using Juice for 6.1.2, 6.2.1, 6.2.2 and it's been working well. An excellent tool for those of us working with multiple SLX environments.

But when I tried virtualising 6.2.3, it did not work. The install goes along fine, but then when I run SLX it does not even get as far as the login screen. Further examination shows that the problem is with the services - none of them will start. Eg if I try to start the SLX Server service manually, I get the following error:

"Could not start the SalesLogix Server service on Local Computer.

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"

So my question: have you got 6.2.3 working in SVS? If not, have you any idea what may be causing the problems?

Cheers
Phil

Phil, it sounds as though the capture of the installation may have been ended prematurely. I haven't run into any problems with SP3 or SP4 for 6.2. How did you go about doing the install, i.e. did you take an existing 6.2.x image, put it into write mode, and run the SP3 install, or did you create a completely new image? Were there any reboots involved in the installation? I've found that there can be issues with the image if a reboot request is allowed to go through during the creation of the image but fortunately there are workarounds for it - see http://juice.altiris.com/node/391 for more info. Depending on how you built the 6.2.3 image, you may want to try the reverse also - i.e. if you built a completely new image, try exporting your working 6.2.2 image, import it with a different name, switch to capture mode, then install SP3... or if you did that, try creating a completely new image. Hopefully that will help

Hi John

Very encouraging to hear that it works for you - I will try again.

I created a completely new image when I did it, so this time I will try the 'export' method as you suggest.

Many thanks for the input.

Best regards
Phil

OK, just tried the Export method. Performing the Export (to an image called SLX 6.2.3) worked fine. However, when I tried to import this back in, I get the message

'SLX 6.2.2 Session Layer already exists. Replace?'

Sounds bad, so I say No, then another message:

SLX 6.2.2_FSLPEERFSL: Session/Layer already exists. Replace?

Which also sounds bad, so I decline again and the layer is not imported.

Obviously, my worry here is that the exported/imported image is going to overwrite my working 6.2.2 image. Any ideas?

Never mind - I've just done the installation from scratch and it works this time. Thankfully - I was thinking I'd have to use VMWare

Thank you for the input
