Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and to SalesLogix but have been a developer for the past 15 years. I'm fully versed in .Net C#, VB and SQL. I've had a lot of experience in ERP systems including Sage's MAS500 and MAS200 for SQL. OK - enough about me.

I've inherited a client who has an installation of SalesLogix and they use it to manage their quoting, ordering and purchase ordering process. There are some basic changes they want to make to their process and I've been preparing myself by going through all of the documentation provided by the product. I've read all the help files and PDF implementation/quick start guides but I can't seem to find a description of the "standard out of the box" version of the program.

As I am looking through the schema and tables, I see a lot of weird things. So here's my question:

Is there a way to know/find out which part of the system has been customized and which part of the system is generic? I'm trying to figure out what was done. When I go into the Architect, I can see a bunch of "bundles" that have been released - is this the place I should look?

Any help someone can point me in would be greatly appreciated.

You haven't specifed what version of SalesLogix this is or if it is the Web or LAN version.

Regarding customizations: Bundles can be a number of things including services packs. The practice is to prefix custom plug-ins, fields, etc. with "c_". You will see this in the Architect provided who ever has been maintaining the system has adhered to standards. Modified plug-ins from SalesLogix DO NOT have the "c_" prefix.

The way to see what is an original plug-in is to select Plug-Ins from the Manage menu (or press F9) and look at the Company column. In general the company "SalesLogix" is the original "vanilla" plug-in. Earlier versions of SalesLogix might have something else in the company name - I forget exactly.

Make sure the list is sorted by plug-in name then look at the "Version" column. The highest number is the latest version - but it might not be the released version. Look at the first two columns labeled "Rel" and "Dev". The "Rel"ease column when checked indicates this is the version being used in production. The "Dev"elopment column indicates the plug-in is released to the developer.

You can probably assume that any plug-in that doesn't have "SalesLogix" in the company column is a custom/customized plug-in.

Before doing any of your own customizations you should check Tools->Options under the General tab. Make sure the "Author" and "Company" fields are filled in properly. By default the fields are not populated but need to be so you can track plug-in ownership, especially if you have multiple developers working on the system. This information is NOT saved in the database and has to be entered for every administrator workstation that has Architect installed.

Thanks for the reply that helps a lot. The version of slx is 7.2 running on SQL 2000. I have 2 last questions that maybe you could answer as well.

1. Are there any issues upgrading the SQL Server to 2005 or reasons why it shouldn't be done?
2. Is there a way to tell if a table is a custom table or standard table?

1. There is no reason not to upgrade to SQL Server 2005. I'd recommend it be done sooner than later. You might want to consider 2008 R2. I haven't made the move yet but will likely do so sometime in the near future.

2. There is no column similar to the plug-in manager "company" column in the database manager. The only way to tell if a field or table was added is if the name has the "c_" prefix as previously discussed or if notes were made in the table/field properties "Description" field.

Regarding point (2), there is a fairly easy way to tell, assuming you have access to a couple of resources:

a) A database differencer, eg Apex SQL Diff (http://www.apexsql.com/sql_tools_diff.aspx)
b) A vanilla SLX database of the same version as your own customised version.

After installing (a), you can ask it to compare the two databases and provide a list of differences (in schema - and even data, if you want). It will find every difference for you.
