Hello and I would like to take this opportunity to thanks to everyone for the help I have been given and the best to you for this year.

I have just installed Saleslogix 7.5.4 on a user machine = has Windows 7 64 Bit and M.S. Outlook 2010 32Bit.

After installing the Saleslogix Lan Client and testing it, then in the option set Saleslogix to use Outlook 2010, I shut down Saleslogix and try and start Outllook. Then Outlook does not start up. A message appears stating the MS Outlook cannot start.

Any ideas to resolve this problem?

Thanks

Hi Derek,

I can't tell if you posted this on ITToolbox the other day or if that was a different person. Anyway, if it wasn't you, there is some discussion on this here; http://community.sagesaleslogix.com/t5/Customer-Experience/7-5-4-LAN-slxab32-dll-slmn-dll-Windows-7-and-Outlook-2010/m-p/136561/highlight/true#M1620

Doesn't seem to be any resolution to it yet.

Patrick

The issue is most likely:

slmn.dll - interfaces with Outlook to record notes-history. It doesn't need a connection to SLX.
slxab32.dll - interfaces with Outlook's address book and needs a connection to SLX in order to add the ab to Outlook. If this isn't configured/misconfigured then this explains the delay (as it can't get to SLX correctly). When you start Outlook for first time after registering slxab32.dll you'll find it prompts you to login using your SLX credentials. There is also an option "don't ask me again". If you fail to configure and switch this on - then it will always have this issue.

You can de-register all or either of the above to remove the undesired functionality (e.g. you might want to record notes-history but not add SLX as an ab to Outlook).

Regards
Mike

I was hopeful Mike!  However, still there is an issue.  I re-registered slxab32 (with Outlook closed), then went to Win7  Control Panel --> Mail (32 bit), selected the E-mail Accounts button, went to the Address Books tab, selected the SalesLogix Address Book,  confirmed the Username, Password, and Database, and pressed the "Check" button, and immediately received the "Successfully connected to the database" response.  I then removed the check mark from the "Prompt on startup" button. Closed out all open dialog boxes and started Outlook again.  Same problem. Outlook times out before opening.  I have two Outlook profiles, and told Outlook to always use a specific one (rather than prompt for) and tried both cached and non-cached mode. No difference.

Outlook presents the same symptoms just having the dll registered even if the add-in is disabled in Outlook. Even so, I disabled all Outlook add-ins and the problem is the same.... something in the dll is stepping on something...

Very strange. If you de-register slxab32.dll - does that work (does Outlook start without issue) ? Also, can you confirm the actual versions of slxab32.dll and slmn.dll (7.5.4.xxxxx)

Hi Mike,

Yes, I have tried unregistering the dll and outlook works fine. I have confirmed the version of the dll's against a listing on the empath-e site (http://www.empath-e.com/support/SLXVersions.txt) and I have the correct ones. I have also, just for kicks, tried using the slxab32.dll from 7.2.2, but that fails even more misably (Outlook can't even start.... how it is with the 7.5.4 ones, Outlook starts, gets to "Loading profile", but never goes past there.  I don't know of any tools that will show me what Outlook is trying to do at that point. I tried Outlook logging, but that doesn't kick in until Outlook is actually open.

Not sure if you saw the other thread, but if I open SLX first, connect to email in SLX (takes a couple minutes), then open Outlook, it does open. Seems to be a timeout issue. I set my Outlook to Exchange timeout from 30 seconds to 60, but it still times out at exactly 30 seconds every time.

I haven't tried on other machines. I will do that later today and let you all know if there is any difference on another machine in our environment.

"takes a couple minutes" - this is odd. Why is this taking so long do you think? Are you on a VPN or something - as it should connect virtually instantly. What's the ping of the server name resulting in (ms or mins!). How long does SLX take to startup (do you see any delays as the progress bars go across screen or any pregnant pauses)? I'm wondering if there is a DNS issue or some other "fallback" behaviour that's occuring to prevent the client talking to SLX in a timely fashion (SQL Native Client -v- Named Pipes etc?)

Gets interesting.....  It's been a while since I have looked at this, so naturally, I get different behavior now.  If I open SLX, it opens within 10 seconds. If I then log onto Email from within SLX, it only takes a couple seconds. If I then go to View --> email from within SLX, Outlook opens immediately (I do get prompted to pick an outlook profile though... same happens if I launch Outlook by itself with SLX closed before it times out), and I have the SLX address book available in Outlook as I should.  If I then close SLX (X in corner), I get the circle with the line through it on the email icon in SLX, and get an outlook error saying "The profile name is not valid. Enter a valid profile name".  If I pick a profile, then SalesLogix continues its logout as normal.

Odd.

Hi Mike and Patrick James.

The Saleslogix version is 7.5.4.7048

The windows os is Windows 7 (64Bit)

I have tried to manually unregister and then register the slmn.dll and the slxab32.dll and this did not change anything.

when doing the registering\un-registering is there a specific format to use being that the Windows OS is 64Bit, something to do with the sysWow64 being included in the run command. I am trying, when registering = regsvr32 c:\program files (x86)\Saleslogix\slmn.dll then for the other one  = regsvr32 c:\program files (x86)\Saleslogix\slxab.dll

When I try and open Oulook it hangs\stops at when the Profile is loading.

Thanks

I've got the exact same problem, Outlook 2010 (32 bit), SalesLogix LAN 7.5.4.

I got around it for now by removing the SalesLogix Address Book from my Outlook profile and now Outlook starts. But though I cannot use SalesLogix contacts to lookup email address (when composing) at least I can Send SalesLogix and Save to History.

Though I don't have a Goto SalesLogix button anymore.

In my case, I upgraded SalesLogix from 7.2.2 and already had Outlook 2003. That all worked fine. It broke when I upgraded to Outlook 2010.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the info. I did also try just unregistering the Saleslogix slxab32.dll then Saleslogix does not work at all. I am really stumped.

Hi Mike,

when I unregister the slxab32.dll then Outlook works but Saleslogix does not work at all = when you try and open the client it re-runs the installation

This is my experience also. The only way I've got anything to work at all is to manually remove the SLX Address Book from my profile.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the tip.

I suppose that is all I can do for the client.

It is disappointing that in the Saleslogix 7.5.4 is actually not fully 64Bit compatible with M.S. windows and office.

Thanks everyone for the points on this matter.

Friends

Does anyone have an update on this item?

We are on SLX 7.5.4 and since upgrading to Outlook 2010 our users are not able to add the SLX Address Book to Outlook.

Once added, Outlook no longer launches.

Regards ... Tom
