Can Saleslogix 7 database be hosted on a database server with other production databases?

Assuming that you're just talking about the db - and not any SLX Server software components - no problem.

I want to install Saleslogix db onto a SQL Server 2005 that is running our MAS 500 db.

Sorry, for some reason I assumed that you meant other production
SLX
databases.
Other people will have their own opinions about this, but I would be tempted to create another SQL 2005 instance on the server and use that to host your SLX V7 db. There may be server-level settings (and collation orders are what come to mind) that are incompatible between the two systems.

Yes. Most of my SQL Servers that host SLX have other databases hosted on the same instance as well. As long as the various databases don't require conflicting settings for collation, etc, and other server-level settings, then no problem at all.

What is the best practice. Should I create two seperate instances one for MAS500 and the second for SLX? Would this degrade performance?

There are some good/valid reasons that could go either way. Personally, I would put it all on the same SQL server instance. Most of my customers who use MAS are also set up the same way.
