We are reviewing our FTP server that was originally a spare server and set it up for ftp purposes when ftp was not really important to our organisation.
There is NO backup process and the maintenance contract around it are poor.

We now realise that is not configured/supported to the level it now needs to be given we have 50 remote databases synchronising via this server.

Can anyone direct/advise me on a benchmark set up for an ftp server that is being used for SalesLogix remote users?
What type of backup procedures should I have in place to enable an ftp server failure to be overcome without recutting all remote databases?

Any advice appreciated!

You are kind of stuck.. backing up your ftp server will be of little help on a failure.. the data on it is changing EVERY sync cycle...

Just make sure the system is always in good shape.. updated w/the latest patches from MS.. don't let anyone use it for any other purpose.. etc..

The backup of the FTP server will be to aid you in configuring FTP folders, etc.

Both the SyncServer and remote systems have an \Archives subfolder that all sent TEFs are stored in until the recieving side returns and acknowledgement at which time thearchived fiel is deleted. If your FTP server fails and TEF files are lost from the FTP server, the SyncServer and Remtoe systems will re-request the TEF files from the Sender who will in-turn retrieve them from their \Archives folder.

You mentioned that your FTP server might not be configured very well for 50 remotes.

It is my opinion that a separate \FTPOut sub-folder should be created for each remote user. I usually just use one common \FTPIn folder and I also just use a common FTP user & passowrd. It is a bit of a hassle that you have to define 50 separate SLX SyncTransfer Profiles - but if you follow a naming convention, and look out for Typos, it can be managed. The advantage is that FTP sync will perform much better (in my experience) then the list of files in a given folder is kept as small as possible - whihc it is in my suggested configuration as the files will only belong to one user. This also makes it much easier to examine each specific FTP folder to see if a particular user is behind on their sync.

I use a common \FTPIn folder as the SyncServer cleans that out completely each time it runs and therefore that file list should not get excessive I believe.

The idea of backing up to preserve ftp folder layout is something that slipped past me... great idea!
