Remote database creation errorYour last visit to this thread was on 1/1/1970 12:00:00 AM

Good day,

I have a SalesLogix 7.0.1 Installation on SQL 2005 and Win2003 Small Business Server.

I was previously able to cut remote databases successfully. I had Administrator installed on a separate server with MSDE installed. The remote databases were created on the MSDE instance, and worked fine. I did not use the SQL Native client.

However, due to some other problems (which turned out not to be problems after all) I changed my connections to SQL Native client. Round about that time I needed to cut another remote database, and got the following error: Database creationfailed : [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]To connect to this server you must use SQL Server Management Studio or SQL Server Management Objects (SMO). I immediately thought that it was due to the fact that I had changed my connections to SQL Native Client, and changed everything back to the SalesLogix provider. However, even after I changed it back, I am still getting this error. I do not know of anything else that changed on the sever. I even rebooted the server thinking that maybe something was left in memory, but I still get the error.

Can anyone give me any idea of what may be the problem? To me it seems to be related to the SQL Server 2005 connection, because if I change the host password I get different error (invalid username, of course). I don't think it even gets to the point where it wants to start connecting to the MSDE instance to create the new database. It doesn't even start reading the data in the SQL 2005 database.

Thanks very much!

Ina

When a similar issue happened to me after we upgraded our DB server to SQL 2005 - I went to DB tab in and reset ALL settings. Then I did the same on the Options screen at the "Create Databases" window.
ALL setting, I mean: Make sure that "Create on MSDE Instance from SQL Host is selected", correct MSDE instance name, IDs and PWs etc.
Admin app does behave very strangely sometimes, for exaple if I restart the Admin app, before creating the DBs, I have to reenter the MSDE sysdba pw, b/c it clears out.

Ina,
I too have had very similiar problems with Slx 7.0.1 running on SQL2005. In addition to the normal Administrative workstation, we created another one, loaded MSDE (from Slx Install DVD), and installed MS SQL Native Client (from Microsoft.com). One problem, raised in Konstantin's reply, the MSDE Instance Name. If you loaded MSDE from the Slx Install DVD, then you have MSDE 2000, SP4 and the Instance Name must be: MACHINENAME/SALESLOGIX. Also, the 'sa' password 'tis a wee bit tricky. The default password is 'SLXmaster'. However, if you have changed your 'sa' password, then try using that instead.

Even before you try generating a new remote DB, you should delete the existing low level ('sysdba') connection and re-create again (and yeah, with that SQL Server Native Client). Also, I found an article on the Sage support website's Knowledge entitled: How to create remote databases in a SQL 2005 environment.

And I have a related question too. At this client, we already have a large number of network users running via the normal SalesLogix OLE-DB Provider connection. The literature states that we've now got to change all of their connections to use the SQL Server Native Client as a basis. This doesn't make much sense to me. Why not keep two separate lower level connections (OLE-DB & Native Client). I haven't had a chance to try this yet, but it should be possible provided we use a separate Admin workstation via the Native Client Provider to generate the remote DB's. Any thoughts are most welcome.

OK, this may be a year & a half old, but I have another solution for this. This system is SLX 6.23 hosted on a brand new server with SQL 2005. The solotion was to isntall a SQL2005 backward campatibility patch on the MSDE machine where we make the remotes.
