We are doing a major data merge and upgrade (to 6.2.5) starting tonight. We have given the sales team a cut off time but I'm curious what the best way to do this should be.

1. If I just disable the user access the sync server will keep making outfiles.
2. If I shutdown sync will the server get backed up with TEF files?

Any recommendations?

Thanks!
Marc

When we do an upgrade we always stop the sync server service so that it is not trying to process during the upgrade. (I believe this is even mentioned in the upgrade workplan.) If you run a SQL backup, it will not contain a backup of the TEF files because they are external to the database prior to the sync server processing them. If you are concerned about the TEF files not getting lost, back them up to a location off the server and that should be fine. If anything goes wrong during your upgrade, you can replace them. BTW, I have yet to lose a TEF file as part of an upgrade process.

Also, if you use the FTP sync process, I would recommend shutting down your FTP service so that users cannot sync during the upgrade period - at least one of them will probably try (or their auto-sync will).

Good luck!
