We've been using remote users for out sales team for awhile now and that makes sense. However now we are starting to look at customer service and we have a few remote locations. Right now I'd say those would have between 5-10 users. Is that enough to really warrant a remote office vs. remote users? From an administrative perspective I'd guess yes, but I'm waiting to hear from my BM about pricing.

How many locations are there?

How many of those 5-10 users per location do you suspect would be using SLX concurrently?

Also, what level of visibility does the data from the remote offices need to have? That is, how long between syncs can the business wait for the data to be available at all locations? How long can each office wait for sync to get to them from other offices? Seems the more office you have the more intense the syncing process will be. Will the level of activity justify acquiring additional hardware to handle this?

What I am wondering is this. Would something like a CITRIX server be better? Users would then log in to SLX through CITRIX to the main database. All data is visible immediately to the whole business.

We used to have remote users (no remote offices) and the experience is that remotes users are high maintenance. Especially when upper management wants to see data immediately like opportunities and the forecasts they live by.

This may be different for a remote office. I'll guess the remote office sync on a regular schedule. So the issue we've had with remote user may not be the case for remote offices.

John,

Most of these guys will be customer support. A few may be sales reps. Generally I'd say these offices would have to sync once a day, just because of volume.

I'd love to do Citrix. That may very well be an option too. The real trick is either option is going to cost $$$. Right now we just have to buy a user license. That's how upper management sees it. The cost of adding another Sync Server would be a lot cheaper.

I maybe wrong, but I think remote office requirements is the same as a regular SLX database. You still need the server hardware to host the database and perform all the syncing. If that's true then you're adding another sync server in-house and a server at each location. Unless you're utilizing existing hardware at the remote locations. I don't know how efficient that would be. Depends on the workload that hardware is dealing with now.

We run to remote office servers, and we are finding them to be a pain. It seems to be a worry for me every week, and sometimes I've had entire weeks consumed with working on remote office stuff. In my opinion, life would be so much easier if people used citrix or terminal server. The only reason we don't is because we have around 60 or more people at the one office and it wouldn't work well for us to have that many people using a remote desktop connection. If you can easily do the remote desktop connections, go with it man.

NOPE.. Been dealing w/Remote Office Installs for years. One of my clints had 7 RO's. They ran very well and hardly any maintenance..

In a less than 10 user scenario you can use MSDE for the db and have the RO (which is really sync) run on the SAME box. NO problems. Use an RO wherever you have 2 or more people that do not need to carry their db with them.

RO's also enable you to scale up SalesLogix. Multiple department RO servers sync'd to the main server w/very few (if any) actual local users are really a slick solution. ... and there is NO subscription rules to deal with!

I also suggest having the RO sync every 30 minutes to keep it running clean.

So in theory, you could have a workstation up and running with MSDE (or the latest incarnation) for the RO?

Is the RO restricted to only the users in that RO?

Are there any additional licensing costs for a RO?

Does it help keep enterprise data segregated from department data for the RO (department can't see what they aren't an owner of)?

Remote Offices sound like they'd be nice to use. Another consideration that I have is that some of these remote offices could possibly be absorbed by the main company in the future. Then it becomes an ROI situation. Will we get our moneys worth out of those licenses if they those remote offices shut down. I think that's a minor factor, but a factor none the less.

Glad to hear that the ROs will run on MSDE. If we upgrade to 7.2 will we be able to use the new "MSDE" (I know it's not called that any more)? That might be a reasonable solution for us since the max DB size increased quite a bit and our maximum database size is pretty much set (we work within an industry that has a pretty neutral attrition/growth rate, so the number of accounts doesn't fluctuate too much).
