When developing against the simulator it is possible to get an 'Invalid Manifest or App Descriptor error'. Generally this happens when the IIS mime types have not been set up correctly. Another possible reason is that the software firewall (Zone Alarm) is effecting the download of the .jad manifest file. There seems to be no indicator from Zone Alarm to access to this file from the simulator. So if you get this issue add the check for software firewall to your list of steps to resolve the problem.
