Funny you should ask..
We are currently building out such a thing for some clients.. I'm using TaskCentre as the WorkFlow "Engine". SO far it's looking real good!
The design allows for one-way or two-way "synch" once teh contacts have been "imported" (using a one-way operation).
Hint: LDAP......
