I'm trying to get a feel for what people have found as best ways to migrate data from legacy systems to SalesLogix.

My assumption is using the SLX OLEDB provider goes without saying.

Which do you find being more adventageous, using something like SQL Server SSIS or creating a script in SQL Server to get data into SLX?

Are there third party products you feel are good for doing this partially or fully?

What else?

All input and questions appreciated!

Thanks
John

In the past we've used the ImportWizard quite often with good success. We've used the ImportWiz for simpler, day to day adhoc type reports. As for a new roll-out I'll often use SSIS and here's why. If we're migrating from a legacy system often there's a period of time where both systems are live untill all users, data and functionality has been migrated. The nice thing about the additional control in SSIS is that we can build the import almost like an integration project where it can continue to run after the initial inserts to update data where changes have been made in the legacy system. Also there's always a few gotchas like, oh there's this other table of related data we really need to bring in as well. In SSIS it's not big deal to modify the project so that the new data requirement is now accomodated.

Some of the things you have to watch out for in SSIS is are things like datetime fields where SalesLogix provider does UTC conversions (i.e if you doing a quick lookup using a native provider and then writing the data using the SLX Oledb provider SalesLogix is going to skew your datetime values - like 1/1/2010 going in as 12/31/2009 7:00PM.

For wholesale migration you may be best to look at a purpose built tool like Inaport. This is available on rental if you are looking at a one-off and Inaplex gives first rate support. For any on-going integration (as well as alerting and workflow), tools like TaskCentre can be useful as it can connect to just about anything.

There are hidden dangers in using SSIS unless you can be sure that all writes/updates to the SalesLogix database pass through its OLEDB Provider.

Good luck!

My job as a consultant is to provide the best, most efficient solution to my customer. When the only tool you know is a language, or a SQL Server tool, you will tend to lean that direction. But, that would not be the best, most efficient solution. As Paul said, there are hidden traps when integrating data with Saleslogix. While most of us old timers know them, it's so much easier to use a tool that has been developed with this traps handled.

Inaport, for example, let's you focus on the problem at hand - Extracting data, Transforming it and Loading it into the SalesLogix system - easily. Integrations can get complex enough without also having to write all the integration framework code, not to mention the data transformation functions. Am I the only one that has to deal with bad data? I use Inaport on every single project I work on. Why? Because the cost is about 500 times less than the cost for me to recreate this stuff over and over. And no, I don't want to create my own Inaport and have to maintain it. David Evans does that for me. And I can tell you that I've had him up at all hours of the night dealing whining about issues that I found as I learned to use his tool. David was always happy to help, and many times delivered new builds of his product 1st thing the next morning to handle a unique situation I came across - NO CHARGE.

I can't recommend him and his product enough. Listen, if you think you're going to lose consulting dollars, just charge the same amount and spend the rest of the month (most of it) in Hawaii or something.

TaskCentre is another great tool I've had to hand code too many workflow and approval systems in the past. If you like doing that fine. I prefer to deliver high impact solutions quickly and TaskCentres basic business activity monitoring toolset is a game changer and if I were to bring up the workflow module we wouldn't even be able to compare it to KnowledgeSync because there would no longer be any basis for comparison.

OK. Back to work. But I won't work too hard since I use these tools on a daily basis.

I would check out Inaport (www.inaplex.com) very good tool for migration and as stated above the support is top notch.

From the looks, Inaport is the winner for importing data. In the past I've used Scribe and it tends to be tedious.

Thanks again!

Hi John

First, my thanks to the folk who have mentioned Inaport.

If you (or anybody else) would like a no obligation demonstration of Inaport, feel free to contact me - david at inaplex dot com.
