Salary Expectations

Hey there,
I was wondering if you guys could offer me some Salary advice.
Background (short version):
- I am an SLX certified Developer working for a Business partner in NY
- I have a degree and a masters in computing from a large european university (English is my first language).
- I have been working in IT for approx 7 years (Java, .Net, etc)
- I have been working with SLX for 3 years.
- I work as a business analyst / consultant / developer for my BP
- I can take a project from start to finish and interact daily with clients.
I get paid Approx 55K is this standard for an SLX developer?
I have a review coming and have no idea what type of percentage increase
I should look for.
Any advice would be appreciated

Hi Marc:
Salary depends on location as well. You stated that you were located in New York? Is that the city? I would think that the going salaries in that area would be higher than 55K for your job, but I do not know that market as well. I know that when I worked in Silicon Valley you would need to be paid more than 55K / year.
Some points to bring up during the review process are:
What kind of feedback / relationship have you had with customers? Are they satisified with your work and wanting you to return for future engagements (more revenue for the company always looks good). Are you generating a fairly high number of billable hours? Again - the point is looking at how much your skills are providing the company. Also are you helping out your co-workers? In my experience if you are contributing and helping out with the "good of the company" you generally find yourself rewarded in the salary department. If all of these are positive answers than you should bring these points up in the review process.
Hope these answers help and this is just my opinion for what it is worth.

Hey Ted,
Thanks for taking the time to go over those points.
I'm based in NYC and would put a check beside each of those points (obviously to differing Degree's)
so I would presume I am being underpaid its difficult to tell as I dont have any reference points to work
with in relation to SLX salaries.
I suppose your 'worth' what the next company will pay you but I dont particularly want to leave
my current employer that said 55K in NYC seems low to me

Hi Marc,
I agree with Ted, for NYC you are under paid. I am in the midwest working for a large bank corp. and we are paid quite a but more the 55k and our cost of living is much lower.
I would say you should be in the 70 - 80+ k range but you should also be on some sort of commision based on the hours you bill. This was my BP experience. As a consultant for a bp I was paid about 55k/year plus a percentage of what I was billing out.

I agree that you are under paid…I see you want to stay with the same company... so maybe this help.
It is rare when companies offers an increase of salary > 10% on their annual review.
So, if I would be you I would negotiate some extra Christmas bonus, vacation time, matching 401K and other non monetary benefits.
I would also get my manager to have list of my weaknesses. So next time when I would have the review I would have the same list with accomplished tasks/goals, so you will have a leverage to push for a better increase.

Thanks for the input, the company is sponsoring my H1B and we are in the process of getting a Greencard.
I know this puts me in a much weaker position but I still feel im underpaid even taking this into account as
I am paying all fee's associated with the Greencard process |

Here's something else you can use as a measure for comparison.
I have 1yr of SLX admin and dev experience and making 45K. About a month ago I got a call from company based in Philadelphia, PA. They were looking for an SLX Admin/Developer with at least 1 year of experience and they were offering approx 75K + sign up bonus + relocation assistance (I currently live in MD). The reason I didn't get the job is b/c they found a local candidate. |

Something I didn't see the others mention is that you may also be able to find a company with a large implementation of SLX that needs an in-house admin/guru. That's what I'm doing. I don't feel comfortable with sharing my salary here but I'm happy with my pay rate.
Some companies would prefer to have someone in-house as opposed to paying a BP all the time. |

| I agree with Marc. After spending two years as a consultant to a Fortune 1000 company - customizing SLX (independant consultant not a BP) and feeding it - they hired me full time in March 2007. Our implentation of Slx and Knowledgesync has helped our business grow significantly and while its not as much fun working on many projects just one - its is very rewarding. |

In Russia an SLX Developer making ~1500-2500$ per month (18K-30K) And it is a maximum rate
My experience:
2,5 years SLX Developer/Admin/Consultant
6 years T-SQL programming
5 years Delphi/VB
3 years Unix-like systems
Bachelor and Engenieer diploma
Is anyone looking for good developer?  |

I just wanted to agree with marc and Paul - working for an company is a great option. I had spent a number of years working for business partners and am now working on the "other side of the fence", and I love it. I do miss the interaction and chance to share ideas with other business partners, but forums like slxdeveloper provides that experience as well.
