New and Lost

Hey everyone,
I'll try and stay positive here. I really don't know where to start. I took a job adding/removing users and supporting an experienced CRM application administrator. We cover about 7 applications, Saleslogix being one of them. I didn't need to know much, but suddenly the guy above me moved on. Management has decided that it's out of the budget to hire an experienced CRM administrator, they decided to hire one more person and train us both.
So I am brand new to Saleslogix and every aspect of it. I've never done application support, never done sql, no server support, never done VB professionally and all of a sudden I am thrust into it... I did do some VB4 back in high school/college almost 10 years ago and some user support during my previous 10 months at a help desk (mainly password resets, no real application support). I currently am studying for my MCSA...
So, they flew me out to Arizona and I did the administrative class there with Roy Martin. It was not bad at all. I learned quite a lot. But I am at a loss on what the next step is going to be? I am at the half way point on a online class in SQL Server and then going to do the vb.net found at www.vtc.com . Do you think that is enough to ready me for the developer class? We were hoping I would be there in June, but I don't see a point to it if I can't get the most from it.
I am looking for advise on where to go from here?

Hey Daniel. You have made it to the right place. The good news is that your company is willing to pay for training, saleslogix has an outstanding group of professionals on this site (Ryan, RJ, Mike Spragg et al) as well as ittoolbox.com .
I teach all the dev courses at Sage alternating classes with Diane, another instructor.
While we use vb.net extensively in the last day of class for .net extensions, most of the customizations you do for the LAN product will be in vbscript.
You can learn vbscript easily by doing classic ASP, wsh files or even vba programming in excel or access. 4guysfromrolla.com is where I used to hang out for vbscript type questions back in the day. You should understand ADO (createobject("ADODB.command") etc as well as the control structures (ifs, loops and the like).
To participate in the dev course and get a lot of out of you do need to know what is going on with vbscript, but not be an expert. It is probably more important that you understand what types of customizations you are expected to create and support so you can realy pay attention in those areas. Welcome aboard - don't worry, we'll all help you ! This, IT Toolbox, GoodTraining etc. are all great sources of information and people are willing to help. We are all professionals and there is [virtually] no flaming - it's not a general public forum that you may have seen on other groups.
The only thing we ask is that you don't post "lazy" questions (that *will* provoke a response) i.e. "x doesn't work, please fix" - we have better things to do than that! Just give as much detail as you can and it'll be jumped on.

Just remember, there's no such thing as a stupid question... just stupid answers.
The best thing you guys did was to start w/some formal training from the team at Sage SalesLogix. Jason has pointed out some good sources of additional data. I also suggest you gat a copy of Sussman's ADO Programmer's Reference (Amazon ahould have it). Steven's DevLogix has good stuff too... and of course - Google is your "friend"

Thank you all for replying. I really appreciate it. I am still feeling a little intimidated but worst case scenario, unemployment line! So qualified CRM Administrator or bust, here I come.
The VBScript is looking good, most of it is coming back to me pretty quickly, and I'll certainly get my management to pick those books up. (budgets!)
My first major project is to repair our test environment. Would it be appropriate to share my problem on this forum? |
