SalesLogix and 64 bit OS

Well I now have a machine with 10GB of RAM, only to find that WinXP SP2 won't support more than 4 - so I want to upgrade to Vista Ultimate (64) since it supports more than 4gb.
I'm laying 2:1 odds that SLX WON'T work properly on the new OS...
Any takers??  |

I won't take those odds for the WHOLE thing working properly, but what we've seen here are, OK for SQL DB and SQL server, clients run in 32 bit mode on the 64 bit OS, but web pieces struggle with all kinds of oddities So I'll go 2:1 that 60% of the environment might work normally  |

Most of the SLX apps I've heard work OK (I don't use a 64-bit OS myself at the moment so can't tell you first hand). There are some things that won't work, such as the .NET Extensions manager, custom 64-bit apps that use the provider, possibly the AA (I can't remember on that one for sure).
But the main apps I believe do work. |

Yep.. correct Ryan. I ran into the same problem on my new Quad Core (lots of GB) system.
SO we run win2003 server 64 bit, SQL server on it.. provider too.. and then VM Server on top of that w/32 bit XP Pro, etc....
Matt.. actually the 32 bit systems ONLY can use 3.5 gb of ram.. that last .5gb is also "throw away".

Yeah the last .5 GB is system load.
Thank God for Virtual Machines. I have a few preloaded win xp pro ones for the various versions of SLX. So I'm sure I'll be fine development wise, but the VM's don't utilize multiple monitors and I'm spoiled that way - I wouldn't be half as fast as I am (but would be twice as frustrated) without the ability to have the requirements doc on one monitor and architect on the other and sometimes I stretch Architect across both and have multiple forms open (actually this happens frequently)...
I'm not going to be able to upgrade this weekend as I had hoped. I'll let you all know how it goes.

VMWare 6+ does support multiple monitors. An awesome feature, I love it and works great. |

Matt,
I have a slight work around for the no dual monitor support.
Prereqs: Have two monitors of the same size & resolution and the most recent version of remote desktop (version 6).
First, make sure your virtual PC is set up to allow remote desktop connections. Start your remote desktop with the /f and /span parameters. That will cause the remote desktop to span both monitors. When you maximize, your app will span both monitors. If you don't want that, download and install "WinSplit Revolution". That will basically allow you to position an app in any quadrant on your monitor. You can use that to maximize an app to full screen on on single monitor. Not quite as good as dual monitor support, but it's still handy.

Jeff.. not virtual PC (Microsquish).. VMWare (EMC)
VMWare is still the fastest and dominates the Virtual world.

Matt never said he was using VMWare or Virtual PC - Ryan just mentioned that VMWare 6+ supported multiple monitors.
And Virtual PC has one huge advantage over VMWare - it's free.

I'm aware virtualPC is "free".. and so is VMWare's VMserver.. and player... If you have VMWorkstation you can download VMWare converter (converts hardware to a VM.. converts VPC to a VMWare image (we use this to convert the images from Sage into VMWare images) .. or Ghost 9, Symantic backup system recovery images. to
. and VMWorkstation is not expensive ($189). Slx Development & QA use VMWare (have for years) so I know I'll not have any issues w/Slx on VM.
Matt did use the initials "VM" and that typically means VMWare. Where VPC usually means VirtualPC.

I used to use VMWare in version 4 but haven't in a while, as Jeff said VirtualPC 2007 is free and I've been using that. I just call them all virtual machines from my VMWare days.
VMWare has a lot to be said for it, and is the premier product I think, but virtual pc 2007 has really been vastly improved over its predecessors as well and as my last experience with VM was v4.x it's a vast improvement over that as well.
As far as the so called upgrade goes - let's just say 'Windows Vista "Ultimate" my 4$$'. Atleast 10 BSOD's over the weekend... ugh.
I'll let you know how it runs on Windows XP Pro 64 as soon as I get some breathing room! |

I've referred to my virtual PCs and VMs interchangeably - given the context people usually know which I'm talking about. Not so much here - perhaps I assumed.
Semantics aside, if his version of VMWare doesn't support multiple monitors, my solution about enabling remote desktop on the VM (or VPC) and connecting via remote desktop with the /span command line parameter, combined with WinSplit Revolution should work as a reasonable approximation (with limits) on VMWare as well. Unless it won't allow you to connect to a VM via a remote desktop, which I can't imagine.

Right now in "Utlimate" everytime I shut down Architect or the SalesLogix client I get a message that the application closed unexpectedly (because the OS apparently doesn't feel hitting the big red x gives it enough warning) and it wants to send an error report.
Groovy.
Pretty, no doubt, but let's just say it's irritating and leave it at that. |
