click on the link to register for the course....there is no button on the web page.

Twitter wants me to Direct Message them, what does that mean and why is there no button on the web screen to 'Direct Message' them.

Activate my phone device, Twitter wants me to text a code to them with some text from the screen. No button to press to send them the code.

With YAHOO all I did was type in my mobile phone number......anything more than that is a PITA.

And one button press for going to a course registration page.....the button being in the EMAIL linking to the registration page for THAT course. Kind of reminds me of the MicroSquish Service Pack download pages...you go to the page and rarely is there a simple click on this button the download is on the way method.....

Not a good design guys.

RJ,

It isn't that bad - I just did it so it can't be too complicated. I admit it took me a moment to figure out how to get the reply on twitter to work. They hide the button until you hover over the button to see you can reply to a message, but that isn't a Customer FX issue.

So it isn't seemless, but it isn't a PITA either. Besides, I saved the company $100 and that is a good thing in this economy. I am also looking forward to learning from Ryan so even if it was truely a PITA I woudn't mind.

Just my two dollars worth (the value of pennys being what they are now a days)

Ted

Hi RJ,

Thanks for the feedback. Sorry to say that I don't control Twitter , but I do wish I would have thought of it first. The Twitter site doesn't really walk you through anything. It just sort of expects that a Twitter user knows what to do.

As far as something I can control, in the newsletter there was a big linked labeled "REGISTER TODAY!". Clicking on that will take you to the registration page. If you've never been to our site and registered before (like for a download or other online workshop) then it will tell you that you need to register as a user on the site in order to sign up for the workshop/class. This way we know who you are already if you ever sign up for other classes too and we don't have to keep asking you for this each time (plus you'll need a login for the site to access the forums for the training class). Once you've registered on the site you'll see a big button that says something like "Click to Register". Clicking that button will sign you up for the class and you'll get an e-mail with additional details.

Now, back to Twitter. I love Twitter. I think it is great and think that anyone not using Twitter is completely missing out . That said, the Twitter site itself really sucks - but that is OK, most Twitter users never even use the site itself. If you're new to Twitter, here are some tips (again, keep in mind that this doesn't really have anything to do with the Customer FX training class registration):

  1. Go to the Twitter site and sign up on Twitter
  2. Once registered, Twitter works best if you have some people to "follow". When you follow someone you're basically subscribing to see their "tweets" or posts. Best way to find some interesting people to follow is to find someone you do know, like Customer FX, Ryan Farley, Mark Dykun, Stuart Carnie, Jason Huber, to name just a few examples. Once you look through who they follow you might see someone else that interests you.
  3. Now, go get a desktop client. Then you never have to see the Twitter site itself again. My favorite client is Twhirl (See http://twhirl.org/). This is a great client that sits in your tray. Then as people you follow "tweet" you get a small, unobtrusive popup near the tray. You can pay attention to those or not. You can also turn those off and just scroll through tweets as you like in Twhirl.
  4. As you hover over a persons picture, either in Twhirl or on the Twitter site, you get options to reply, direct message them, etc.

That is it. Now you'll have this flow of info you've subscribed to that you can either pay attention to or not.

The main reasons why I like Twitter are:

  • I like feeling connected. I work at home so I like being part of the community and learning from others, seeing what they are working on and personal stuff too. I feel like I am a better developer because of this.
  • I can find out about new things very quickly without a lot of reading.
  • I can subscribe to people that are WAY smarter than me and I feel like I get to listen in on their conversations to learn from them.
  • I can subscribe to product Twitter feeds and get to see things they are working on and even reply with feedback (it is too bad that Sage doesn't do this)
  • I get a chance to learn more about people I associate with on a "work" level. I see things they are doing and stuff that is going on in their lives.
  • I get to be cool and part of the Twitter crowd

Really, I do love Twitter. When I am at my desktop I use Twhirl and I use Twitterberry on my Blackberry to stay connected to it all the time

As far as what Twitter has to do with the Customer FX training class? CFX likes Twitter. We plan on using Twitter to run some special offers, give things away on Twitter, etc. Just a more personal to interact with the community, so we thought it would be a fun medium to give stuff away on (but you'll have to be seeing our Tweets to be aware of the offers). You don't have to follow us on Twitter or use Twitter at all, but...

  1. It's fun
  2. You'll get free stuff on occasion from Customer FX
  3. You get an easy way to interact with others and learn about them
  4. You'll get to learn more stuff by following Smart people

Anyway, feel free to let me know if you need any Twitter help and I can let you know what to do.

Thanks!

Well Brianna was super nice, got me signed up for your class lickety-split, and I can't wait to learn from the master in how to develop in 7.5.
