Can someone explain to me the difference between creating a hierarchy by assigning a parent account as opposed to creating an account association to link the parent and child? What are the advantages/disadvantages to using one method over the other? We are using SLX 6.2.

They are both used without dependence on one another. Association forms a link between any number of accounts and contacts - and in any direction. Whereas a parent/child link can only go in one direction

e.g.

Account A is a parent of Account B which is a parent of C - therefore A->B->C - but there is nothing between A->C {directly}

With associations - you can link A to B, A to C, C to B and B to C and so on.

Note also - that parent/child only works (by default) on accounts. Whereas associations can also be created for contacts.

What this means in business terms - using parent/child you can link parent and subsidiary firms together and sub-divisions, and with associations you setup the relationships between the individuals i.e. vendor/sub-contractor. What you cannot do in either case is have a contact be related to a different account by a separate reporting line e.g. Contact A is a Non-Exec of Company B and is chairman of Company D etc. If you need that - contact me !! I also have MindManager export of all relationships to see it much more graphically !

Using the account parent/child feature allows you to describe a company's parent's and subsidiaries.

Account (or contact) associations allow you to associate a relationship betwen an account (or contact) with another account (or contact). For instance, a relationship an account might have with a vendor. Or the relationship between a contact and a sales rep at another account (the competition!)
