I just found this excellent article at http://www.slxdeveloper.com/page.aspx?action=viewarticle&articleid=77

It reminded me of a debate which has been running here for sime time, that is whether single quotes are allowed in email addresses. For example we have had a few entered like john.o'hare@abc.com - is that valid or not? At the moment we are not allowing them, the same as the script in the article, but should we, since there seem to be people who have addresses like this?

I don't believe that char 39 is valid for an e-mail address (although I haven't checked the RFC for quite some time, so only guessing).

BTW, that is a great, short but sweet article. Thomas did a good job with that one - very useful.

We just tested trying to create an email account using an apostrophe, and in Exchange 2003, it isn't possible. Maybe it is in another type of email server. Just my two cents...

Ryan.. I took a quick at the books on my shelf...
Per MIL-STD-1781 (RFC-821) paragraph 6.5.2.1:
.. any of the 128 ASCII characters.....
However, since sendmail was (and still is in some cases) very touchy about some characters in the headers (especially the FROM and TO parts), it's recommended that :
A - Spaces be avoided
B - \"<>()[],;: all be avoided
C - be careful in using @ and !

I think I'll be adding that as a validation for our email addresses
