I'm currently looking at creating an Online Demo of a module we've created and what to know if anyone can recommend some software.

Simular to the one customer FX use http://www.customerfx.com/resources/quotemodule/QuoteModuleDemo.htm

The two I evaluated were Camtasia and Adobe's (formerly Macromedia) Captivate. I believe they both create flash output but a difference is I think it's Captivate that can create an interactive demo whereas Camtasia is just a video. I may have that backwards or completely wrong.

Captivate runs about $600 w/o upgrade and Camtasia will set you back about $300. It may be a good idea to evaluate both and see how you like the interface because if it's hard to use, I doubt you'd be using it much.

Duncan,

Ryan is out for a few days, but I believe he used Captivate for the demo you referenced. I'm sure he'll chime in when he returns.

Many Thanks for the help!

Yes, I used Captivate to create that demo. It is quite nice and I would highly recommend it. It is easy to edit and add and remove parts easily. You can also make it interactive as well (like with a quiz or something at the end). Really great stuff and output it all as Flash.

BTW, I use both Captivate *and* Camtasia. It really depends on what it is for as to which one I use. If it is a demo and I want it to look crisp and clean with onscreen prompts and text (and also interactive) then I will use Captivate. If it is more of a walkthrough as tutorial or screencast or something then I will use Captivate.

One thing to keep in mind as well is file size. Since Captivate outputs flash you have to be aware of the screensize, resolution of the images, any sound added etc as that will all add to the file size and delay the user's from seeing the demo (if it takes too long to load then people won't likely stick around to wait and watch the demo). Since Camtasia can output to Flash and also mpeg/avi etc, you can make it stream which will load significantly faster but will not look as nice.

Let me know if you have more questions and good luck!

-Ryan

Ah yes, one other option I thought of. Wink is a free program that produces flash demo's similar to Captivate. Personally, I still prefer Captivate over Wink, but Wink's price tag sure is nice

Thanks Ryan, I've used Captivate already and am very impressed, as you say you really need to control the file size as it can easily get out of hand.
Apart from that it really is a fantastic product.
Thanks for the other suggestion too, I'll have to have a look at thoses.
